Wanted Taxi: Fire Engine Turned Up

Just before 9 o'clock on Wednesday morning an officer in charge at the Taunton Fire Station received a call from a woman living in Parkfield-road, Taunton, saying “Come quickly!” A fire engine went clanging through the streets to the address give,n <sic> and the firemen were met with bewilderment by the occupier of the house, bewilderment which turned into laughter when it was realised what had happened. The woman had meant to dial Taunton 2695, which is the taxi rank, but by mistake had dialled 2685, which is the Fire Station.

The Brigade had another false alarm call early on Thursday morning. A policeman, at 3 a.m., saw smoke coming from the Co-operative Bakery, which is close to the Fire Station in Magdalene-street, and warned the Brigade. Two firemen investigated and found it was a baker burning waste paper.
