Ex-Miner Dies of Silicosis

Bridgwater Inquest

A verdict of “Death from silicosis.” in accordance with the medical evidence, was recorded by the Bridgwater Coroner (Mr. R. C. ROWE) on Wednesday when he completed the inquest on Charles PARKER (77), retired miner, 7, Gloucester-road, who died on November 14th.

Mrs Laura PARKER the widow, said her husband, a native of North Petherton, had worked in various collieries in South Wales. Since 1925 he had complained of pains in the chest. He was treated at Llwynyfia and retired about 12 years ago when they came to Bridgwater. He had since been treated at Bridgwater Hospital. A claim was made in June for compensation for silicosis, and he received the first payment in November.

Dr. C. MacGAFFEY, pathologist, gave evidence that death was due to silicosis, stating that the lungs were heavily laden with coal dust.
