No “Pot Hunting” at Cheddon Fitzpaine

Children's Gymkhana Awards

One of the most interesting children's gymkhanas of the season was that held at Rowford Field, Cheddon Fitzpaine, on Saturday, by permission of Mr. H. C. MUSGRAVE. To avoid what the organisers referred to as “pot hunting,” the rules allowed only one competitor and one pony to be entered in each race. The result was far keener competition and a more(?) interesting afternoon for both riders and spectators.

A feature of the gymkhana was a parade by the Taunton Vale Foxhounds. To the sound of the huntsman's horn, the hounds made several circuits of the field, followed by dozens of young riders.

Excellent arrangements were made by a committee with Commander HARRISON as chairman. The judges were Capt. A. PALMER, Mrs. CLOWES and Mrs. HEBELER; starter, Brig. P. CLARKE; secretaries, Mrs. R. J. HARRISON and Miss GULLIFORD; announcer, Col. H. SAWYER.

Two cups for jumping, given by Commander and Mrs. HARRISON, were presented by Mrs. SAWYER. The senior trophy was won by Marjorie SPILLER and the junior cup by Judy BRIERS.

Potato race, 13 and under – 1. J. BRIERS (Snowy); 2, N. THOMPSON (Peter); 3, B. WADHAM (Lilo).

Bending race, 10 and under – 1. J. SWEETING (Gay Lady); 2, J. MORRIS; 3, M. BETTS (Lightning).

Bending, 10-16 years – 1, S. FLETCHER (Mighty Atom); 2, S. PARLBY (Liz); 3, A. MARSHALL (Peter).

Fancy dress, 5 and under – 1, G.(?) HILL (Fish), L. STODDARD (Puck), and C. MELVILLE (Tommy Tucker) equal; 2, R. HORNE (Secret), and A. NORMAN (Gypsy) (equal); 3, V. HILL and W. NORMAN (Lightning).

Senior jumping, 16 and under – 1, M. SPILLER (Cream Bun); 2, S. FLETCHER (Hopit); 3, Mr. RUTTER's pony.

Musical poles, junior, 10 and under – 1, P.(?) YOUNG (Woodman); 2, J. SWEETING (Peggy); 3, S. HORNE (Foam).

Water carrying race – 1, P. SESSIONS-HODGE (Moorland Lassie); 2, M. HOLDER (The Talisman); 3, J. LOCKYER (Nimbus).

Junior jumping, 13 and under – 1, J BRIERS (Snowy); 2, S. SPENCER (Belinda); 3, Mr. RUTTER's pony.

Musical poles, seniors, 16 and under – 1, S. FLETCHER (Mighty Atom; 2, J. TAYLOR (Gay Lady); 3, P. SESSIONS-HODGE (Moorland Lassie).
