Boer War Veteran Dies at Taunton

Knew 50-Year-Old Son Only Six Weeks

Mr. John LAMBERT, who did not return to Taunton from the Boer War until 50 years later and then saw his youngest son, Edwin, aged 50, for the first time, died in the Taunton Hospital last week and was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery on Saturday.

He did not see his wife (who died 25 years ago) after leaving for South Africa in 1900, and Edwin was born not long after he had sailed.

Mr. LAMBERT, who was 80, leaves two sons and three daughters. All except the elder son saw their father in the hospital, where he had two operations. He told the family that his memory was very bad owing to a head wound received many years ago.

He left behind papers, however, showing that he also served in the 1914-18 war, with the rank of Company Sergeant Major, and had lived in Manchester. He was taken ill immediately he arrived back in Taunton, and Mr. Edwin LAMBERT, who lives at 12a, Bath-place, knew his father for only six weeks before he died.
