Golden Wedding at Curry Rivel

Mr. and Mrs. P. MOUNTER's Anniversary

Former Coal Merchant

A well-known Curry Rivel couple, Mr. and Mrs. Paul MOUNTER, celebrated their golden wedding on Wednesday week.

Mr. MOUNTER, now 89 years, is a native of Curry Rivel, having lived in the village all his life. At the age of 16 he started up in business as a coal merchant. In those days Mr. MOUNTER said that coal was still being brought up the river Parret to Langport by barge, and he had to fetch his supplies from the river wharf.

His means of transport at that time was two donkeys and a cart. After successfully carrying on the business for 66 years, he finally disposed of it to Messrs. Bradfords in 1950.

Keen Sportsman

Mr. MOUNTER has always taken an active interest in the life of the parish and in his young days was a close follower of sport, being particularly keen on flat racing, football and cricket. He retains his interest in the local cricket and football clubs right up to the present day. He had been a staunch worshipper at St. Andrew's Church for over 80 years. A keen gardener he at one time was a regular exhibitor at the local flower shows.

Mrs. MOUNTER, his second wife, came to Curry Rivel from Warminster when she was 21. She also has closely identified herself with the life of the village. A founder member of the Women's Institute she also belonged to the one-time famous Parret Vale Choir.

Lover of Flowers

A great lover of flowers she manages her own floral garden, and although 82 is able to do all her own household duties.

Mr. and Mrs. MOUNTER have always been lovers of a game of whist, and Mrs. MOUNTER still attends occasional whist drives.

The couple have three sons, Arthur, who owns an electrical, television and radio business in the village. Donald, his twin brother, employed at Westland, Yeovil, and Raymond, who assists in the electrical business. There are also three children by Mr. MOUNTER's first marriage. Henry in Australia and a son and daughter in Bristol. His first wife was Miss LENTON, a daughter of the late Samuel LENTON, who owned a wheelwright's business in Curry Rivel.

Mr. and Mrs. MOUNTER celebrated the anniversary quietly at their home surrounded by five of their children and ten grandchildren. A greetings telegram was received from their son in Australia.
