Ile Brewers Inn to Close?
Seven-Day Licence Removed
Edwin John BUNSTON, of the Rusty Axe Inn, Stembridge, successfully applied to Langport Licensing Justices on Monday for the removal of the seven-day beer and wine licence in respect of the Ile Brewers Inn, Ile Brewers, to the Rusty Axe Inn.
Appearing for the applicant, Mr. R. F. CARPENTER said both houses were owned by Hambridge Brewery, Ltd., whose policy it was to modernise on-premises as much as possible. The conditions at the Ile Brewers Inn, said Mr. CARPENTER, were such that modernisation was not possible. For this reason it had been decided to apply for the removal of the licence to the Rusty Axe and to surrender the six-day beer and wine license of that inn.
Applicant said he had been licensee of the Rusty Axe Inn for six years and his trade had increased with the erection of about 140 council houses near his premises. He had received repeated requests from his regular customers and from passing motorists to serve drinks on Sunday, and he thought there was considerable demand for a seven-day licence. He understood it was intended to close the Ile Brewers Inn.
Edward Stanley SPARKS, licensee of the Ile Brewers Inn, said that trade at the inn had been “falling off” for the past two years and he had no objection to the seven-day licence being transferred to the Rusty Axe.
A customer at the Rusty Axe for 50 years, John WATTS, Council Houses, Stembridge, and Derek PITMAN, another customer, gave evidence in support of the application.
There was no objection to the application.
