Hard Times Recalled

North Petherton Golden Wedding

Hard times when they brought up their family on 11s a week were looked back upon by Mr. and Mrs. William Joseph (Ben) ADDICOTT, 3, Dyers Green, North Petherton, on Thursday, when they celebrated their golden wedding. They were married at Bridgwater Registry Office on May 16th, 1907.

To-day, at 73, they still enjoy life, Mr. ADDICOTT being as active as a man much younger. He left school when 11 and worked for fourpence a day.

A native of North Petherton, Mr. ADDICOTT was engaged in farm work for many years in the Rhode district, and later at Boomer Farm, Kingscliff. He has been a keen gardener and successful exhibitor at the local shows. Two years ago he won an award of merit for fruit.

Jobbing Gardener

Since retiring from farm work he has acted as a jobbing gardener. One of his brothers was the late Mr. James ADDICOTT, a Bridgwater motor dealer.

Mrs. ADDICOTT, formerly Miss Emily BINDING, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert BINDING, was born at Durston, but brought up at Charlinch, her father being employed at Currypool Farm for 60 years.

Of their family of nine, four sons and two daughters are living. There are 14 grandchildren.

They were the recipients of many presents and messages of congratulation. A family party was held in the evening, when an iced cake made by a grand-daughter and decorated by her fiancé was cut.
