Home After 35 Years
Curry Visitor from U.S.A.
Mrs. Alice SAWTELL, member of a well-known Curry Rivel family, is visiting her native village for the first time since she left this county for the United States 35 years ago.
Born in Curry Rivel, she is a daughter of the late Mr. Walter BAKER and is one of a family of nine (six boys and three girls). Two of her sisters and two brothers who still survive all live in the locality.
She spent her childhood days in the village, but during the 1914-18 War was employed in London on munition work. Her husband, Mr. Charles SAWTELL, is a native of Fivehead and emigrated to the States some years before World War I to join his parents, who were farming there. Mrs. SAWTELL went over to join her fiance in 1923, and following their marriage they settled down in Marcellus, near Syracuse, N.Y. State, where they have lived ever since.
Husband Retired
Her husband was engaged for some years with the Franklyn Motor Works, and during the great depression and until his recent retirement with the Highways Corporation. Mr. and Mrs. SAWTELL have one married son.
Mrs. SAWTELL is staying with Mrs. BUTCHER, her sister, at Townsend. She arrived at London Airport on Tuesday. It was her first-ever flight and she says she was so impressed with the journey that she would never travel any other way if she could afford it. She has already met a number of her relatives, but a family reunion is to take place after the wedding of her nephew, Gordon RICHARDS, who, returning from Canada, is being married at Taunton on August 9th.
Mrs. SAWTELL says she misses many of the old faces she used to know, but otherwise there are very few changes in her “home town.” Her visit is to last four weeks. She leaves again for America on August 23rd.
