Barclays Bank Extension

FOUR years ago Barclays Bank, Ltd., paid £22,000 for 45, North-street, Taunton, then the Bear Inn, better known as Scarlett's. On Thursday, of last week, the premises were again open to the public – as one of the best appointed banking halls in the provinces.

Taken over by Barclays in June, 1954,the premises have been added to the bank's premises, 46, North-street. The reconstruction work commenced over three years ago is nearing completion, and the new extensive banking hall, with room for over 100 customers, is finished in grey marble and Australian walnut. The new front, in Portland stone and Exeter brick, is a model of simplicity, toning excellently with neighbouring buildings.

The building work is a tribute to Messrs. W. S. Stansell & Sons, and to the architects, Messrs. H. S. W. Stone & Partner.

Mr. T. L. DELVES, Barclays Taunton manager, says he expects all outstanding work on the premises to be completed by late summer.
