32 Years' Record Spoiled
Woman's First Driving Offence
Miss Gladys Maud LANGFORD, school teacher, Snelgrove, Knapp, North Curry, who was stated to have held a driving licence for 32 years and never previously been involved in an accident, was fined £4 at Wells on Monday for driving without due care and attention.
Represented by Mr. M. L. G. HINDLE (Wells), she pleaded guilty.
The prosecution resulted from a collision between defendant's car and a van at Beechbarrow, Wells.
Inspector H. E. LOXLEY explained that Mr. Arthur Albert STONE, a Bristol van driver, signalled his intention of slowing down and gradually pulled in to the near side verge. He was about to stop when there was a violent collision, as defendant's car ran into the back of the van.
Defendant made a statement to a policeman in which she alleged that the van driver, without any signal, braked very fiercely, and although she applied her brakes, she was unable to avoid a collision.
Mr. HINDLE said but for the fact that it was not possible to call as a witness for the defence one of the passengers who was in the defendant's car, the plea would have been not guilty.
Neither defendant nor her passenger, Miss THAYNE, saw any signal from the van driver, and neither was there any pulling in to the kerb such as would lead the defendant to expect that the van was pulling up.
