Postal Worker for 44 Years

Imperial Medal For Mr. A. H. White

Thursday was a memorable day for Mr. Arthur H. WHITE, of Peveril, Cheddon Fitzpaine. It was his 60th birthday, he was retiring from the Post Office and he received from the Imperial Service Medal for long and meritorious service from the Head Post-master, Mr. H. J. CHARLTON.

Mr. WHITE started work with the Post Office at Taunton in 1914, and in 1938 was made counter and writing overseer, a post he filled until retiring.

During the first war he served in the Royal Navy as a telegraphist.

He is a keen gardener, and colleagues at the presentation commented on his brand of home-grown tobacco.

Long Enough”

Representatives of various Post Office departments paid tribute to his work and to his understanding of their problems. He was presented with a pair of binoculars by the staff.

In reply Mr. WHITE said he had sometimes felt he should not be retiring yet, but 44 years in the same job was long enough for any man. Although he had done his best while working, he had always realised there were other things in life.

He added: “We are, no doubt, on the verge of more mechanical processes, but I think the machine should be geared to the man and not the man to the machine.”
