Sixty Years Married
Mr. and Mrs. W. J. SWAN
Mr. and Mrs. William J. E. SWAN, of Castle Green, Taunton, celebrated their diamond wedding yesterday (Friday). They were visited by the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. E. J. H. HARNELL), who presented them with a bouquet, and received a message from the Queen.
Mr. SWAN has served the 'Somerset County Gazette' for 66 years, having started as an apprentice in the printing department in 1894. For a long time he was general overseer in the news-room. For 47 years he and his wife – they are both in their 80th year – have lived on the 'Gazette' premises as caretakers. Both enjoy remarkably good health. They were married at St. Mary's Church, and have three sons (two of whom are married) three grandchildren and two great grandchild. Their only granddaughter, Barbara emigrated to Australia with her husband, Mr Jack WASMUTH, last year.
