Thomas NEWBERRY
[4941]
I should like to know something about a Tauntonian, Thomas NEWBERRY, who published a bible some 70 or 80 years ago, and was, I believe, in business in the town. S.C.R.

A Taunton Artist
[4942]
Do any of your readers remember the Taunton artist W. H. TROOD, who was deaf and dumb? One of his pictures 'Waiting until the clouds roll by,' portraying two dogs under an umbrella, was accepting by the Royal Academy in about 1895 or 1896. ANON

REPLIES TO QUERIES
Thomas NEWBERRY
A Taunton Author
[REPLY TO QUERY 4941]
Thomas NEWBERRY was born in Taunton in 1810 and was connected with the firm of Newberry and Blake, the High Street forerunners of Messrs. Hatcher.
His bible, published by Hodder & Stoughton, first appeared in 1886 in three volumes, and was followed by a single–volume edition in 1890, known as the 'Newberry Bible,' The title-page bears the following: 'The Englishman's Bible, arranged so as to give, as far as possible, the accuracy, precision, and certainty of the original Hebrew and Greek Scriptures on the page of the Authorized Version, by means of simple and appropriate signs, and with the Divine titles distinguished and explained. Adapted both for the Biblical student and for the ordinary English reader.'
The preface to the bible shows it to have been written from Alexandra Villa, Weston-super-Mare, where Mr. NEWBERRY retired and died.
Other Works
Mr. NEWBERRY gave lectures on religious subjects and besides his bible published other works – all of a religious nature, which are listed in the British Museum catalogue as follows:
Companion to the Englishman's Bible (Hodder & Stoughton, 1888);
The Days of the Passover, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus (Hodder & Stoughton, 1888);
The English-Greek Testament, uniting the precision of the original Greek with the text of the Authorized Version (S. Bagster & Sons, 1882);
Notes on the Book of the Revelation (J. F. Shaw & Co., London, 1887, second edition 1892);
The Passover and the Lord's Supper (J. E. HAWKINS, London, 1884);
Quotations and Remarks, or conscientious objections to an alleged third class of Christ's sufferings . . as set forth in a tract entitled the 'Sufferings of Christ' (London, 1873);
The Tabernacle and the Temple . . . being the supplement to the large print edition of 'The Englishman's Bible' (Hodder & Stoughton, 1887);
Walking with God (Publishing Office, Glasgow, 1884).
