To straighten the Tone
Taunton Town Council will be asked on Tuesday, to authorize the Markets Committee to obtain tenders for straightening the River Tone between Priory Bridge and Firepool
Delay in carrying out the scheme is holding up the markets redevelopment plan. It is understood that the Somerset River Board will repay the cost of £27,000 if the Ministry of Agriculture approves a grant for the Tone Valley flood prevention scheme.
The Sun Inn, Canal Road, is to be pulled down and the site used for market purposes.
The Borough Engineer has submitted revised flood protection schemes for the Galmington and Blackbrook streams. He is considering alternative proposals for the Sherford stream.
After a long discussion the committee has deferred consideration of the schemes until its next meeting.
