Died at a whist drive
Mr. Charles WELFARE, of 30, High Street, Bishops Lydeard, died suddenly at the weekly whist drive in the Village Hall on Thursday, 29th August.
Mr. WELFARE, who was 77, had regularly attended the drives with his wife for a number of years. While play was in progress he collapsed and died before a doctor arrived.
He had lived at Bishops Lydeard for 34 years and was groom in the service of Mrs. VERNON, Lydeard House, until he retired nine years ago. He was born at Croydon and went as a small boy to Ilminster, where his father was the head coachman for Colonel Vaughan LEIGH at Dillington House. He worked in the old Holway Hunting (Taunton) stables as a groom for many years. During the First World War he served in France with the R.A.S.C. In his early days he was a keen cricketer.
The funeral service at Bishops Lydeard Church on Wednesday was conducted by the Rev. E. WILLIAMS and Mr. H. J. SKINNER was the organist.
Family mourners were:- Mrs R. WELFARE (wife), Mr. H. OATEN (brother-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. F. TAYLOR (brother-in-law and sister-in-law), Mrs. E. TANTAN (sister-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. FERINANDO, Mr. and Mrs. SALWAY, Mr. and Mrs. E. SAFFIN, Mr. and Mrs. G. SAFFIN (nephews and nieces).
Many friends attended, including representatives of the British Legion (men's and women's branches) and of the Women's Institute, of which Mrs. WELFARE is a member.

later). It could be either of them.
