LOCAL & DISTRICT NOTES

<section not transcribed>

By command of the King, the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset (the Marquis of Bath) will hold a public investiture at 12 noon, on Tuesday next, on the terrace of the Municipal buildings, Taunton. The following are the recipients of orders and decorations awarded for services rendered in connection with the war:- Mr. Tom BROWN (Deputy Chief Constable of Somerset), O.B.E. (civil); Mrs. GIFFORD, Chard, M.B.E. (civil); Miss B. M. BUTLER, Draycott, Newbridge Hill, Bath, Royal R d <sic> Cross (2nd class); Miss E. M. PETHICK, Weston-super-Mare, Royal Red Cross (2nd class); Mrs. G. A. WILLS, Langford Court, Royal Red Cross (2nd class). A guard of honour and band will be provided by the depot, Somerset Light Infantry.

Miss BUTLER is a daughter of the late Mr. A. H. BUTLER, of Union street. A fully trained nurse with wide experience, she was at home when war broke out and at once went to Cragg Head Military Hospital, Bournemouth. Later it became necessary to try and “pull up” the military hospital(?) in Branksome Park, Bournemouth, and Miss BUTLER was asked to take charge. She was particularly successful, but she and her staff had very strenuous years. She remained matron of that hospital till it closed in April 1919. Miss BUTLER's award was gazetted in August 1919, but she was then in Newquay, and unable to go to Buckingham Palace for investiture. She is now at home, having retired from her profession.
