ILMINSTER.

PETTY SESSIONS. - Wednesday. Before T. B. UTTERMARE chairman, W. BLAKE, R. T. COMBE, and W. SPEKE, Esqrs. George VIRGIN, George HARDING, John OLD, Robert WINES, John TAYLOR, and James MASTERS, all of South Petherton, labourers, were summoned by Isaac LANG, carpenter, of Lopen, for an assault on the 3rd December. The five latter defendants settled the matter before the case was called on, but VIRGIN did not make his appearance. The serving of the summons was proved by Sergeant WHITTING. The complainant on being sworn said on the night in question he was at the Crown Inn, at Petherton, when the defendant with the others pushed and him about, he then went outside where they assaulted him. Sergeant WHITTING came, and they left him. When he got about half way home they overtook him, knocked him down, and beat him about the head and face, VIRGIN was the worst of them. Defendant was fined 10s, and 10s costs, or 21 days' hard labour. A warrant was issued for his apprehension. - Charles PAULL and Thomas PAULL, two brothers, of Isle Brewers, were charged on the information of James ROWLAND, gamekeeper to Wm SPEKE, Esq, for trespassing in search of game, on Sunday week. The magistrates dismissed the case. William CAPLE, of North Curry, labourer, was charged by Mr VILE, of the Hatch Inn, for being drunk and riotous, and refusing to leave the house. Fined 10s and 7s 6d costs. Thomas FERRIS, George HULL, and John COX, of Chaffcombe, were summoned by Mr Richard COLEMAN, of Cricket, for trespassing on lands in his occupation in search of rabbits on the 20th Dec. FERRIS and HULL were fined 15s each including costs, and COX who did not appear was fined £2. - James RUSSELL was brought up in the custody of P.C. SANDIFORD charged with stealing a chain belonging to the coal boats on the 28th. Dismissed. - Samuel JUKES, a moulder in the employ of Mr George PARSONS, was summoned by Sergeant WHITTING for being drunk in the streets of Petherton. Fined 5s.
