BRIDGWATER.

THE SANITARY AUTHORITY. - At a meeting of the Rural Sanitary Authority, on Friday, the inspector (Mr. LING) made a further report on the Wembdon nuisances, and the overflow of sewage, &c., in the open fence ditches. A committee was appointed for the purpose of viewing the spot, and suggesting means for the abatement of the nuisance.

THE UNION. - A further communication has been received by the guardians of the Bridgwater Union on the subject of the erection of an infectious hospital, the Local Government Board insisting upon the provision of additional accommodation, and refusing their assent to the proposal of the guardians to convert one of the wards of the infirmary into an infectious ward. It is now suggested that the urban and rural sanitary authorities should take joint action in the matter.

COUNTY POLICE. - Henry PHILLIPS, a farmer's son, summoned for trespassing on land at Lyng, in the occupation of Mr. Felix MARSHALL, was fined 10s and costs. - Aaron WILLIAMS pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Elizabeth POLLARD, at Ford Gate, North Petherton, on the 16th of March, and was fined 2s 6d, and costs. - Joseph WARNER, for being drunk and riotous at North Petherton, on the 18th of March, was fined 5s and costs. - Robert STONE, Benjamin BARTLETT, Joseph FEAR, and Thomas HUTCHINS, four young men, were charged with obstructing the highway at North Petherton, on the night of the 19th March, when it was stated they were dressed in disguise, their faces being also blackened, and brandished sticks about, frightening all persons they came across. They were fined 10s each and costs. - Alfred GODFREY, of Huntspill, was ordered to pay 1s 6d per week towards the maintenance of the illegitimate child of Mary POLLARD, of the same place.

THE ASSISTANT OVERSEERSHIP. - A public meeting of the ratepayers was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, under the presidency of the Mayor, to receive the report of the committee appointed to consider the duties of the assistant overseer, and the necessary steps to be adopted in consequence of the death of Mr. PLOWMAN. The Mayor read a report, which recommended that the sum of £200 be paid for the duties of the assistant overseer, £30 for the collection of the highway rate, and £20 for the collection of the watch rate, making in all £250; that the duties of the office be defined in the same manner as when Mr. PLOWMAN was elected, but that one rate be collected before another was made; and that the officer appointed be required to provide separate sureties in a guarantee sociesy?? in respect of the poor rate, as well as the highway and watch rates. An amendment was proposed, that the salary should be only £200, but on a division the report of the committee was agreed to, and another meeting was fixed for Thursday evening, to appoint a successor to Mr. PLOWMAN. There are several candidates in the field, and it is certain that a poll will be demanded.
