TAUNTON NEWS.

The Town Council have made the footpath in front of the establishment of Messrs. Penny and Son, in Wood-street.

We understand the captains of the Salvation Army have secured Davis's Hall, adjoining the Baptist chapel, in Silver-street. The hall is now undergoing repair.

We would call attention to an advertisement announcing a meeting to be at the vestry on Monday, the 1st of May, at 11 o'clock, for the purpose of considering the subject of a testimonial to Mr Robert BAILEY, the late organist of St. Mary's Church.

During the past week a substantial brass lattice-work partition has been placed along the edge of the counter at the Taunton post-office, with about four inches space left underneath for persons to obtain stamps, orders and letters through, so that it is impossible any one from the public side can reach over the counter.

GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY. - There will be no alteration in the running of trains in this division for the month of May, and the time tables for October will remain in force.

BAND RECITAL. - On Friday the fine bands of the local regiment of Prince Albert's Light Infantry gave a recital at the Taunton Athletic Grounds. A very agreeably diversified programme was gone through, and the attendance, not only of officers and men of the regiment but likewise of the general public, was numerous.

THE ATHLETIC SOCIETY. - The adjourned meeting of the Athletic Society was held on Monday evening at Clarke's hotel. Mr FOWLER in the chair, and it was agreed after some further discussion that the proposed new pavilion should be erected in the manner recommended, at a cost not to exceed £700 to be raised by £1 shares, shareholders limited to members of the society.

REGIMENTAL DETACHMENT ORDER. - By Colonel PATTON commanding 2nd Somerset Rifle Volunteer Corps. - Headquarters, Taunton, 21st April, 1882. - Officer on duty for the ensuing week, Captain SWEET. - (By order), GEO. S. PEARD, Major and Adjutant.

2ND SOMERSET RIFLE VOLUNTEERS. - A and B Companies. - Orders for the week ending 28th April, 1882. - Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, recruit drill; assemble in the Corn Exchange at 7.30 p.m. - Thursday, the A and B Companies will assemble in the Castle yard at 6.30 p.m., for the commanding officer's drill and inspection. Forage caps to be worn. Band and pioneers to attend. - (Signed), H. C. SWEET, Captain commanding A Company, A. W. THOMPSON, Captain commanding B Company.

INQUEST AT RUISHTON. - An inquest was held at the Ruishton inn, before W. W. MUNCKTON, on Friday, on the body of Annie DAVEY, aged 26 years, granddaughter of Sarah HILL, Mark's Farm, Ruishton. George HITCHCOCK deposed that on the previous Tuesday morning, shortly after quarter-past six o'clock, he was going to the back premises with the milk-tins for the purpose of going milking, when he discovered the dead body of the deceased in a water-tub, her head and arms covered by the water. She was partly dressed. - Miss Eliza NICHOLAS, the schoolmistress at Ruishton, said she was in deceased's company the previous evening at Mr Charles GODFREY's. She wished her “Good night” a little before ten o'clock, and she then seemed to be in her usual good health and spirits. - Dr. PAULIN, of Creech St. Michael, deposed that he saw the body of the deceased about eight o'clock on Tuesday morning, and in his opinion life had been extinct an hour or more. - The jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased destroyed herself while temporarily insane.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. - On Sunday morning last a determined attempt at suicide was made from the Tone Bridge, by a woman named Mary PIKE, belonging to Watchet. She been visiting some relatives in Taunton, who on Friday last noticed that her mind seemed disturbed, and consequently locked the doors in the house, including that of the room in which she slept. On Sunday morning, however, it was found that one of the back windows was open and that she was gone. Search was made, and it transpired that a few minutes before six a railway porter had seen her on the bridge, and about ten minutes later a postman named PLEASS saw the woman floating down the stream, with her hands crossed on her chest. He ran down Coal-orchard, opening on the river, and with assistance got her out and took her to a neighbours house, where she received every attention, and was subsequently removed to the house of her friends. PIKE, who is about 35 years of age, is in a weakly mental condition, and we hear has since been removed to Wells Asylum.

WEST SOMERSET ELECTION. - T. Palfrey BROADMEAD Esq,. the high sheriff of the county, sat on Tuesday from 12 to 3, in the Shire-hall, to receive nominations for a Knight of the Shire for this division. The only nomination made was that of Edward James STANLEY, Esq., of Quantock Lodge, Over Stowey, the nominator being Sir Alexander Bateman Perriam Fuller HOOD, Bart., and the seconder James Ware PAULL, yeoman. The nomination paper was dully placed on the hall door, and no second one being forthcoming at the close of the specified time Mr STANLEY was declared duly elected, and accoutred with the customary sword of a Knight of the Shire, and a merry peal on St. Mary's bells subsequently gave further intimation of the event.

THE BEST SHOT IN THE MILITIA. - The permanent staff of the 3rd Battalion Prince Albert's (Somersetshire Light Infantry) held the proud position of being the best shooting staff in England for the year 1880, and through the results of the shooting of 1881 have not been published, it has been notified officially to the battalion that Colour-Sergeant Samuel OATEN is the best shot of the Militia of the United Kingdom, and has been awarded a government prize of £4 as such.

FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE. - The London Gazette of Friday night contains a general order of the Privy Council, issued with the view of preventing the spread of foot and month disease, and talking effect from the 30th April inst., ordering that every local authority in England and Wales shall take necessary steps for ascertaining whether the regulations of the Privy Council, as regards cleansing and disinfection of railway pens, cattle trucks, landing-place, wharves, etc., are well and efficiently carried into effect within their districts, and report thereon at the end of June next, and on every subsequent three months.
