EXTRAORDINARY SCHOOL ATTENDANCES. - At the annual distribution of prizes to the children attending the Langport and Huish Episcopi United District Board schools, which was held last week, the chairman of the board (Mr James KELWAY) drew attention to the fact that the lad William SAWTELL, whose remarkable record of attendances was publicly noticed last year, had now an unbroken record of eight years' attendances, namely, 3,504 times, without one absent mark. Mr C. I. ELTON, M.P., and Mr. H. HOBHOUSE, M.P., whose attention had been drawn to the fact, each sent the lad half-a-crown, and Mr Vincent STUCKEY (formerly chairman of the board) kindly made up the amount to a sovereign. The boy, who is a son of Mr William SAWTELL, of Coombe, Huish Episcopi, the champion ploughman of this district, also received a prize of a handsome volume from the board. Frank PARSONS had made every attendance for four years, 1,743 times; Arthur SAWTELL (brother of the above), three years, 1,304 times; Andrew CULLEN, Henry RUSSELL and Marion BANYARD, two years, 868 times each. Mr Francis MEADE, C.C. (formerly vice-chairman of the board), presented each of these with money prizes, ranging from 5s to 2s 6d, according to their attendances; and they also received prize books from the board. Ten other children received medals for attending every time the school was opened last year.
