TAUNTON POLICE COURT.

WEDNESDAY.

Before the Mayor (Alderman G. SAUNDERS), Mr R. H. SEARS and Mr Wilfred MARSHALL.

OBSTRUCTING FORE-STREET.

A lad named James SKINNER, described as an orange vendor, was summoned for obstructing the free passage of the highway in Fore-street, by allowing his barrow to remain stationary for an unreasonable length of time. - Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined 1s, with 2s 6d costs. - P.C. REDWOOD stated the facts.

THURSDAY.

Before Mr R. SEARS and Mr H. J. BADCOCK.

SMUGGLING SPIRITS INTO THE WORKHOUSE.

Eli LITTLEJOHNS, an inmate of the Taunton Workhouse, was brought up in custody on a charge of introducing intoxicating liquor into the workhouse on Dec. 24. - Prisoner pleaded not guilty. - One of the workhouse nurses named Louisa TALBOT, stated that on Dec. 25th prisoner brought some whisky to her in the nursery in a small bottle. They put the whisky into the beer which they were allowed and drank it together. - Mr John BLIZARD, master at the workhouse, stated that the day after Christmas day he found the bottle produced in the nursery cupboard. The bottle smelt of whisky. He accused prisoner of bringing spirits into the workhouse, and prisoner replied “Yes, I did, but I'm sorry for it.” - Prisoner was bound over in his own recognisances to come up for judgment when called upon.

MONDAY.

Before Mr H. J. BADCOCK.

TIRED OF A SOLDIERS LIFE.

Reuben MONCKTON, a young man who said his age was 17, of East Lambrook, was charged on his own confession with being absent without leave from the Royal Artillery, Woolwich. Prisoner enlisted last week at the Taunton depôt, stating that is age was 18. He was drafted to Woolwich on Wednesday, and on Saturday he left for home. His father, believing he could claim him, took him to the Taunton depôt on Monday, and prisoner was then placed under arrest – Mr BADCOCK remanded the accused to Exeter prison to await an escort.
