NORTH PETHERTON.

THE FANCY FAIR AT SHOVELL HILL. - The Fancy Fair (a report of which appeared in our last week's edition) was quite an unqualified success, as no less than £72 was taken. This sum has been distributed as follows:- Officers' Wives' Fund, £20; Soldiers' and Sailors' Fund, £20; County Patriotic Fund, £10 10s; whilst the residue, less expenses, has been remitted to the Indian Famine Fund.

OLD PEOPLE'S TEA. - The annual old people's tea, which took place at Shovell House recently, was highly appreciated by all who attended. Through the great kindness of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. JAMES, all the aged poor and widows in the village were invited to tea in the garden, a brake being provided to take them to and fro from the village. The tea tables were arranged on the lawn in the south front, being presided over by Mrs. A. B. JAMES, the Hon. Mrs. M. PORTMAN, Mrs. CURTIS, Mrs. GILES, Mrs. HAWKINS, Miss JAMES, and Miss WEBB. After a most enjoyable tea various games were indulged in for prizes, and useful and ornamental articles given to the winners. Considerable amusement and interest were shown in the contests at Aunt Sally, walking matches, potato and egg and spoon races, pitching to basket, &c. An old gentleman, who was 88 last birthday, proved to be one of the keenest and most successful competitors present. The evening passed most pleasantly, and upon leaving each person received a packet of tea and tobacco.
