BOROUGH POLICE-COURT.
WEDNESDAY. - Before the ex-Mayor (Mr. J. STANDFAST), Major-General EMERSON, Alderman W. LOCK, and Mr. W. POOLE.
THE UNRULY MEMBER. - Charles SEDGBEER, a youth, of Rowbarton, pleaded guilty to using bad language in Railway-street, Rowbarton, on the 23rd of December, and he was fined 1s and 5s costs. -
Frederick HAYMAN, labourer, of High-street, pleaded guilty to a like offence in Fore-street on the 23rd December. - Defendant had a bad record, and was now fined 10s and costs or 14 days.
CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS AND THE SEQUEL. - Fred CARPENTER, bricklayer, of Bishop's Hull, pleaded guilty to being drunk and incapable on Compass Hill on Boxing-day. - Supt. DURHAM said defendant was usually a very quiet man and he was let off on payment of the costs. - Jas. MAPLEDORAM, haulier, of Cardiff, did not appear to a summons for being drunk and disorderly in Fore-street on the 27th, but he wrote admitting the offence. - P.C. SMITH proved the case. - Fined 1s and 7s costs. - Frank HANNAFORD and Samuel GIBBONS, labourers, pleaded guilty to similar offences in Fore-street on Christmas-day, and were each fined 1s and 5s costs. - P.C. MOXEY proved the cases.
ASSAULT IN A PUBLIC-HOUSE. - Fredk. FROST, labourer, of King-street, was summoned for assaulting Emma HAWKINS, of King-street, on Christmas-day, but he pleaded not guilty. - Complainant stated that on the evening of Christmas-day she met defendant, with whom she had previously been living, in the Taunton Arms, and after some little altercation he struck her between the eyes. - Rosie WESTON, a little girl, of King-street, who was in the complainant's company, also gave evidence. - Defendant alleged that complainant scratched his face, and in a scuffle which followed he might have accidentally hit her. - James PRING was called on behalf of the defendant, and he said he did not know whether he struck complainant or not. - Defendant was fined 1s and 9s costs.
MONDAY. - Before the Mayor (Councillor A. VILLAR) and Mr. W. POOLE.
TRAVELLING ON THE G.W.R. WITHOUT A TICKET. - Wm. PARKER, carter, of Birmingham, pleaded guilty to travelling on the G.W.R. on the previous Saturday without a ticket. - Chief Inspector SHATTOCK, of Exeter, prosecuted on behalf of the Railway Company, and stated that defendant was found travelling from Bristol and Taunton in the same carriage as a number of soldiers without a ticket and without money. The soldiers were on their way to Devonport – Defendant expressed sorrow for what he had done, and said he had a wife at Birmingham to maintain. He had had a drop of drink and was persuaded by his companions to get into the train. - Fined 10s and 3s 6d costs or 14 days.
