DEATH OF MR. ARCHIBALD CHANNING.

MEMBER OF OLD TAUNTON FAMILY.

We regret to announce the death, which took place at his residence, Lowlands, Taunton, on Wednesday morning, of Mr. Archibald CHANNING, head of the well-known Taunton firm of solicitors of that name.

Mr. Archibald CHANNING was a son of Mr. Henry CHANNING, who was a solicitor in Taunton for many years, carrying on a practice which had been in existence, under various styles, since the middle of the 18th century. At first Mr. Archibald CHANNING adopted the military profession, entering the Army from Sandhurst, and joining the 1st West Indian Regiment. Owing to attacks of fever on the West Coast of Airfca <sic>, however, he had to resign his commission, and then, after serving his articles, with his father, he qualified as a solicitor, joining his father's firm, and eventually succeeding to the practice. Mr. CHANNING had not been well of late, but had been able to attend to business until a fortnight ago. His friends were not gravely concerned for him until a few days ago, when an attack of bronchitis developed, leading to heart failure, from which he succumbed, in his 63rd year.

The funeral took place at Wilton Church at noon on Saturday. The service in the church was conducted by the Vicar (the Rev. Claude BECKWITH), who also officiated at the graveside. The mourners included Mr. F. C. CHANNING (brother); Messrs. W. J. TRENCHARD, Bishop's Hull; E. B. KITE and H. Byard SHEPPARD (solicitors), and Messrs. G. H. and H. NATION, H. P. PALMER, M.A., W. H. FISHER, J. S. WINSOR, C. J. GOODLAND, and Mr. and Mrs. C. A. BURROUGHS, Mr. C. LEY (Milverton), Mr. C. KENT-BIDDLECOMBE, and Mr. Walter C. ELLIS (managing clerk to the late Mr. CHANNING).
