WHITESTAUNTON.

FUNERAL OF MR. SAMUEL S. CLARKE. - Amid the deepest sympathy and respect the funeral took place on Wednesday at the old Parish Church, where he was churchwarden for nearly 40 years, of Mr. Samuel S. CLARKE, of Woodhayes Farm, whose death was reported last week. The Rev. A. P. LANCE, vicar of Buckland St Mary officiated. The hymns “Brief life is here our portion” and “Peace, perfect peace” were sung. The cortege then proceeded to the graveside, and after the interment “On the resurrection morning” was sung. The coffin, which was of polished oak, with brass furniture, bore the following inscription:- “Samuel Shire Clarke, died 17th January, 1924, aged 70 years.” The chief mourners were as follows: - Mrs. CLARKE and Mr. W. CLARKE (widow and son), Mrs. B. DYER and Mr. H. CLARKE (daughter and son), Mrs. F. GRABHAM and Mr. J. CLARKE (daughter and son), Mr. F. GRABHAM and Mrs. H. CLARKE (son-in-law and daughter-in-law), Mr. W. CLARKE and Mrs. EDWARDS (brother and sister), Mr. P. CLARKE and Mrs. GREADY (brother and sister), Mr. S. CLARKE and Mr. B. DYER (brother and son-in-law), Messrs. H. and E. VICKERY (brother-in-law and nephew), Masters Sam and William DYER (grandsons), Mr. and Mrs. PAUL (nephew and niece), Messrs. W. LOOSEMORE and W. CLARKE (nephews), Messrs. S. GREADY and B. CLARKE (nephews), Messrs. T. ROWE and G. WALE (friends). Others present were Dr. E. N. JUPP, Mr. T. A. FORWARD, Mr. S. WEEKS (late of Weston Farm), Mr. H. REED (Crimchard Farm), Mr. John WALE (Pyle), Mr. BARTLETT (Knapp Farm), Mr. L. SMITH (Howley), Mr. A. AUSTIN (Howley), Mr. F. BERRY, and others. As the funeral procession left the grave-yard muffled peals were rung. There were several beautiful floral tributes, including a beautiful cross of white chrysanthemums and ferns from the widow and family. Miss Olive AUSTIN was at the organ. The bearers were six nephews, namely, Messrs. F. PALMER, F. PARRIS, S. EDWARDS, C. CLARKE, F. CLARKE, and D. GREADY. - Mrs. CLARKE and family take this opportunity of expressing thanks to all kind friends for their kindnesses and messages of condolence in their sad bereavement.
