SEPARATION ORDER FOR WIFE

MAINTENANCE AND CUSTODY OF CHILDREN.

HUSBAND'S OUTBURST.

At the Taunton Borough Police-court on Wednesday Mary CRIDLAND, married woman, living in an East Reach court, obtained a separation from her husband, William CRIDLAND, a cattle drover, with the custody of her three children and an order for maintenance at the rate of 30s per week. The husband, on hearing the decision, vehemently remarked “She is very unlucky. You had better send me to prison – I will never pay a penny.”

Defendant pleaded not guilty, but in a long statement Mrs. CRIDLAND said her husband kept her short of money, and when in drink ill-treated her, and bruised her arm and leg on one occasion.

The husband denied all the allegations, and said the trouble was caused through his wife's mother. He also complained that his wife “niggled.”

Applicant said she obtained an order four years ago just before going into the sanatorium. She had always regretted going back to her husband.

Replying to the Chairman (Mr. F. W. PRITCHETT BROWN), Mr. C. MINETT, court missionary, said he had been a visitor to the home for several years. On one occasion, about a month ago, the wife was in a terrified state, and had a bruise on her arm. From what he saw in the home he considered it was a case for a separation.

It was stated that defendant was receiving a disability pension of 11s per week.

After some consultation as to the custody of the children the Bench gave their decision as above stated.
