POOR LAW CHANGES.

What exactly will be the changes to be made when the new Local Government Act comes into full operation, in April next? The old Board of Guardians will be superseded by the Public Assistance Committee, and already that body, with its officials, is being formed, so that everything shall be in readiness when the machinery is called into operation. Meanwhile there are changes in the local staffs. Mr. W. T. GLASS, the popular clerk to the Wellington Board of Guardians, has been appointed Public Assistance Officer for the County of Somerset, and has taken up his duties at Weston-super-Mare, being succeeded at Wellington by Mr. S. L. CHAVE, assistant clerk to the Taunton Board of Guardians, as his deputy. As a new official at Taunton would not be taken over under the new scheme the Taunton Board have had to drop the office of assistant clerk, and they hoped to get over the temporary difficulty by increasing the clerk's salary and thus enabling him to provide additional clerical assistance. The Ministry, however, will not agree to this, but suggested that an allowance should be given to meet the additional clerical assistance. In connection with the passing of the Board of Guardians, it is interesting to note that the parish of Cheddon Fitzpaine has been represented by only three Guardians, the present member Mr. Robert BRUFORD, his father and his grandfather, the first two named having been chairman of the Board. This is undoubtedly a record.
