TAUNTON AMBULANCE WORKERS RECORD.

RED CROSS MEN AWARDED CERTIFICATES

INTERESTING FUNCTION AT BRITISH SCHOOLS.

Certificates gained by local members of the Somerset V.A.D. For examinations in hygiene and first-aid work, were distributed to the successful ambulance men at a highly successful social evening held at the British School, South-street, on Tuesday evening. Work performed by the local men during the past year has been of a very high standard and the number of successful candidates at the annual examinations constitute a record.
The presentation of the certificates to the men was made by Mrs. A. G. BARRETT, of Trull, who has done a good deal for Red Cross work in Somerset. Mrs. S. WHITE, commandant of the Taunton branch of the V.A.D. And Quartermaster Walter HILL were also present, together with Major BARRETT.

FIRST-AID EXAMINATION FOR ALL.

Speaking after the presentation, Mr. WHITE said he was proud to see so many young fellows taking an interest in such excellent work. He pictured the day when everyone, even school-children, would have to pass some examination in order to be able to render assistance to fellow beings in cases of accidents. He congratulated the men on learning something useful, and said the results constituted a good record; the men had added yet another honour to the list. He concluded by thanking Mrs. BARRETT for the service which she was always so willing to render for the Detachment.

Mrs. BARRETT, in her remarks, said that the Detachment was undoubtedly sorry to lose Brig.-General FRITH as county director. Colonel ALLFREY, however, was going to take his place, and she felt sure he would be a great acquisition to the county.

Mr. Walter HILL also spoke, and said that the only trouble they experienced locally in Red Cross work was that the men did not stick to it, they had to be content with about four years' service at the most. He would like to see 10 years' service.

During the evening an excellent entertainment was given by the Gaiety Girls and the following artistes:- Miss N. HANDEL, Miss E. JARVIS and party, the Misses E. BOON, C. ROSEWARNE, JARVIS, and I. HART, and Mr. F. PARSONS, Mr. PERKINS, and Miss M. HANDEL. Miss E. LAWRENCE was in charge of the programme, while Mrs. PARSONS was the accompanist.

The artistes were heartily thanked for their services by Commandant S. WHITE and Major BARRETT.

A dance folowed <sic>, for which Mr. C. BROWN and his band provided the music. Several of the old-fashioned dances were revived.
