CHEDDON FITZPAINE.

DR. INGLE'S [sic] SUCCESSOR.

ANOTHER NAVAL CHAPLAIN AS RECTOR.

Rev. Christopher GRAHAM, M.A., O.B.E., senior chaplain of the fleet and chaplain of the Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport, has accepted the living of Cheddon Fitzpaine, Taunton, which is in the gift of Lord PORTMAN. He will succeed Rev. C. W. C. INGLES, for many years a naval chaplain and hon chaplain to the King.

A MAN'S MAN.

Mr. GRAHAM's departure from the city in the early part of the New Year will be regretted by his many friends and a wide circle of acquaintances. His chaplaincy brought him into contact with large numbers of naval officers and men, to whom his wide and tolerant outlook, his deep earnestness, and his desire to be counsellor and friend have been a source of inspiration and help. Those most closely associated with him describe him as essentially a man's man.

With the exception of a comparatively brief period, the whole of his career has been devoted first to the Army, and later to the Navy. When at Caius College, Cambridge, of which his father was a Fellow, the South African War broke out, whereupon he joined the Suffolk Regiment as a University volunteer. On returning to civil life he held a charge at Gravesend for a time, but in 1906 joined the Navy as a chaplain.

WORK IN WAR.

He served first in the Black Prince, but in the same year joined the Venus, and later was in the Cochrane, Essex, Formidable, Commonwealth, Vulcan, Gunner, and Malaya. In 1920 he became chaplain at the Royal Naval Hospital, Haslar, and five years later filled a similar position at the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth. In 1928 he was appointed to the Royal Naval Barracks, Devonport.

When war broke out he served as chaplain under Admiral Sir Jomes [sic] STARTIN at Granton Naval Base, Edinburgh, and it was for the services he rendered in his extensive “parish” of the First of Forth that he was warded [sic] the O.B.E.
