DEATH UNDER ANAESTHETIC.
TAUNTON FAMILY'S BEREAVEMENT.
MOTHER OF EIGHT CHILDREN.
“MISADVENTURE VERDICT.”
The death of a mother of eight children after an anaesthetic had been administered at the Taunton and Somerset Hospital was described to the West Somerset Coroner (Mr. Geoffrey P. CLARKE) on Friday at an inquest on Mrs. Lilian May BINDING (37), of 42, Musgrave-road, Taunton.
The husband, Sidney Thomas BINDING, an unemployed labourer, said his wife complained of pains about two months ago, and Dr. MEADE-KING and Dr. COLLINS were called in. On April 13th, his wife gave birth to a son, who was doing well, and Dr. COLLINS attended her. Witness had seven other children, all in good health. On medical advice his wife entered the Taunton and Somerset Hospital about noon on Wednesday for an operation. Witness understood the operation was not serious and gave his consent.
“CONDITION POOR.”
Dr. C. B. MILLER, house surgeon at the Hospital, said between noon and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Mrs. BINDING was treated medically as her condition was poor. Dr. Nicholson LAILEY saw her about 4 p.m., and although she said she felt better the doctor was of the opinion that she was worse, and that it was necessary to operate as soon as possible. The anaesthetic was commenced about five o'clock and four minutes later she collapsed. The anaesthetic was ethyl chloride, followed by ether. Artificial respiration was applied and oxygen and carbon dixoide were given, and drugs injected into the heart muscle. The operation was not commenced.
The Coroner: Dr. LAILEY was of the opinion that the operation was necessary to save her life? - Witness: Yes. Her heart and lungs were examined before the anaesthetic was given and appeared to be healthy.
Dr. Godfrey CARTER, pathologist, gave a report of his post-mortem examination, and said there was a serious internal condition which was incurable. The primary cause of death was anaesthesia, and secondly, acute strangulation of the bowel. Nothing but an operation could possibly have saved life, and the lightest and safest anaesthetic was used. He was satisfied the anaesthetic was properly and skilfully administered.
The Coroner said he was perfectly satisfied that no blame attached to Dr. MILLER, who gave the anaesthetic. He returned a verdict of “Misadventure,” and expressed deep sympathy with the husband and family in their tragic loss.
