TAUNTONIAN ELECTED A COUNCILLOR. - Mr. Frank OATEN, M.J.I., second son of the late Mr. and Mrs. H. C. OATEN, of Albemarle-road, and a member of an old Taunton family, was on Saturday elected at the head of the poll for the new Denton and Chalk Ward, created through the extension of the borough boundaries, of the Gravesend Town Council. He was Labour candidate with a local doctor and a woman J.P., and all three were elected, defeating their Conservative opponents by a large margin. Mr. OATEN is a brother of the late Mr. Sid OATEN, so well known in Taunton Labour circles. He was vice-chairman of the Denton Parish Council, and had the Chairman as an opponent. Retiring from active journalism five years ago, he is a life member of the Institute of Journalists. He went to Gravesend 19 years ago as Editor of the “Gravesend Reporter.” but left it in 1919 to enter Fleet-street journalism, being on the staff respectively of Lloyd's List, the Press Association, the “Westminster Gazette,” for a short time of the “Daily Mail,” then of Newspaper House, and finally he had charge of the reporting at Marlborough-street Police-court. He was also for 2½ years connected with Sir Oswald STOLL at the Coliseum offices, creating and running the “Stoll Herald.” His wife (nee MOCKRIDGE) is a native of Eastbrook, Trull, and he has one son who is a member of the staff of the Bank of England. Mr. OATEN is an old “Gazette” apprentice. During his election campaign Mr. OATEN received serious news concerning his sister, Mrs. B. LUND (nee Nellie OATEN), who met with a very serious motor accident at the beginning of March. Her 11-year-old son, Alan, his little dancing partner and her mother, and two other children and their mother, were travelling from Toronto to Hamilton to take part in a children's revue when their car was involved in a crash with a large truck or lorry. Alan's little dancing partner was killed. Mrs. LUND was picked up unconscious with a severed ear and a great gash over her left forehead, the mother of the other two children received such severe injuries that her life was despaired of for a time, but she will, when she recovers, be left with permanent effects, and the others escaped with shock. They were taken to Hamilton Hospital, and the latest news received is that Mrs. LUND is making a good recovery. Alan LUND has won many prizes in Toronto for dancing, and he was being trained for a stage career. Whether he will be able to continue is at present undecided.
