WOUNDING CHARGE.

ALLEGED KNIFE ATTCK AT TAUNTON.

PEDLAR REMANDED IN CUSTODY

William John SAUNDERS, aged 37, a pedlar, of no fixed abode, was charged at Taunton Borough Police-court on Tuesday morning, before Mr W. G. POTTER, with unlawfully and maliciously wounding with a table knife Walter Edward OATEN, of Baldwin-road, Taunton.

Supt. FRY stated that at 2.15 p.m. on the previous day a young man named OATEN had an altercation with prisoner in Roman-road.

It was alleged that SAUNDERS produced a table knife and stabbed OATEN in the head, necessitating his being taken to the Taunton and Somerset Hospital. Stitches were inserted in the wounds, and later OATEN was allowed to leave the hospital.

CUT ON THE HEAD.

P.C. POCOCK stated that at 2.30 p.m. on Monday, in consequence of a complaint, he went to Roman-road and saw SAUNDERS and OATEN, who had a cut on the left side of the head. He ordered OATEN to hospital, arrested SAUNDERS and took him to the Police-station and charged him.

Supt. FRY said he did not propose to offer any further evidence on that occasion, but? to ask for prisoner to be remanded in custody until Jun 26th at 10.30 a.m.

When asked by the Clerk if he objected to being remanded, SAUNDERS said “I was only sitting down. ...”

He also said “If people cannot leave a man alone on the road sitting down ….”

He was advised not to make a statement then, and agreed to the remand.
