HATCH BEAUCHAMP.

LATE MR. JAMES HICKS.

30 YEARS WITH LIEUT.-COLONEL GAULT.

A figure representative of the days of coach-and-pairs and fours-in-hand has passed away in the person of Mr. James HICKS, of Grey Lodge, Hatch Beauchamp, who died on Sunday at the age of 72 years.

Mr. HICKS had not been in the best of health for some weeks, but his death came as something of a shock, after only two or three days illness.

He was very popular with many of the people in the village and was a much-respected figure among the staff at Hatch Court.

He was in the employ of Lieut.-Colonel A. Hamilton GAULT for between twenty-five and thirty years, having served him in the capacity of coachman in Canada and later in England.

WELL-KNOWN COACHMAN.

His services were greatly appreciated, and in later years Colonel GAULT regarded him more as a personal friend than as a servant.

Mr. HICKS lived formerly at Hatch Court, but for the past eight or nine years had been living at Grey Lodge with Mr. and Mrs. M. SQUIRE.

He was a well-known figure at local shows, and his showmanship with carriage horses was widely recognised.

The funeral took place at Hatch Church on Tuesday, when a very large number of villagers attended as a testimonial of the esteem and respect in which Mr. HICKS was held. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. E. G. CANHAM, rector of Hatch Beauchamp.

THE MOURNERS.

The principal mourners were deceased's brother, Mr. F. HICKS, of Manchester, Lieut.-Colonel and Mrs. A. Hamilton GAULT, Mr. and Mrs. M. SQUIRE, Mr. and Mrs. F. ELKINGTON, of Taunton, the entire indoor and outdoor staff of Hatch Court.

The coffin was borne by members of the staff of Hatch Court. They were Messrs. F. FAULKNER, W. MANNING, E. HANCOCK, and F. DERRICK.

FLORAL TRIBUTES.

There was a profusion of floral tributes, among which were the following:- Deepest sympathy from brother Fred, Manchester.
