'BUS DRIVER FINED.

TOO MANY PASSENGERS.

BARRINGTON MAN'S OFFENCE.

At Taunton Borough Police-court on Wednesday, before Dr. R. L. MEADE-KING (in the chair), Mrs. C. MINETT, Mr. H. J. POLLARD, and F. H. F. CALWAY, Charles CORNELIUS, of the Royal Oak Inn, Barrington, was summoned for carrying an excess number of passengers in a public service vehicle at Taunton on December 21st and failing to wear a public service vehicle conductor's badge.

P.C. SPENCER stated he was on motor patrol in Hamilton-road, when he saw defendant driving a public service vehicle in which an excessive number of passengers was being carried. The vehicle stopped at the entrance to the playing fields. There were 42 adults and seven children in the 'bus, making 17 in excess of the seating capacity. When questioned by the constable the driver remarked “there is a relief 'bus coming.” When asked why he was not wearing a conductor's badge he remarked that he had forgotten it that morning.

P.C. HANHAM corroborated.

Defendant, addressing the Bench remarked that he was driving a relief 'bus. It was a very foggy night, and he did not know how many passengers were in the other 'bus. He took the passengers as it was such an unpleasant night.

He was fined 30s for the former offence, and 5s for the latter.
