A gentleman well known in Taunton, and, indeed, in the whole of Somerset, passed away Tuesday morning in the person of Mr. Robert BRUFORD, who died at his residence in Kilkenny Villas, Rowbarton, Taunton, after only a week's serious illness, although his health has been failing for a considerable time. Mr. BRUFORD was 69 years of age, and he had taken a large part in public life for many years, until slow decay of his once robust frame rendered it unwise that he should perform those duties any longer. He was much interested in the administration of the Poor-law, and occupied a seat on the Taunton Board of Guardians for about a quarter of a century, nearly half of which time he held the chairmanship, and he was a co-opted guardian up to the time of his death. On the formation of the Somerset County Council he was elected the representative of the Bishop's Lydeard Division, and he was also one of the county quota on the Somerset Joint Police Committee. From these offices, however, he retired some time ago. He was also a member of the Taunton Market Trust and a director of the Taunton Gas Light and Coke Company, and some ago he was for a considerable period a councillor and subsequently an alderman of the Taunton Corporation. Mr. BRUFORD was a prominent agriculturist, and for many years he occupied Nerrol's Farm, Cheddon Fitzpaine, which had been in the tenancy of his father and grandfather before him. The deceased gentleman leaves a widow, two sons, and four daughters, and two sons predeceased him. By the oft-expressed desire of Mr. BRUFORD, his remains are to be cremated.
