LINK WITH FORMER CHEDDAR INDUSTRY

THE LATE MRS. ELIZA SARGENT.

The residents of Cheddar and district received with much sorrow and sympathy, the news of the passing of Mrs. Eliza SARGENT, of Sargent's Corner, Cheddar, which occurred on Friday last.

The widow of Mr. Charles SARGENT who died in 1928, Mrs. SARGENT passed away after a long illness most patiently and bravely borne. She was in her eightieth year.

Mrs. SARGENT was highly respected, and possessing a gentle and kindly nature, was loved by all. She will be greatly missed by the members of the Cheddar Methodist Memorial Church, in which church she had maintained her life-long interest despite the fact that she was laid aside by illnes [sic] during recent years.

Her husband was a member of a well-known Cheddar family and is still remembered by the older generation of Cheddar residents, as the manager of the former Gas Works in the Cliffs. The undertaking belonged to the proprietors of the now defunct Cheddar shirt factories, and the gas was solely used for illumination and power in the factories. All the buildings have long since been demolished.

THE FUNERAL.

The funeral took place at the Cheddar Methodist Memorial Church on Tuesday afternoon, the service being conducted by the Rev. A. R. FULLER, resident superintendent minister. Mr. F. SCOURSE, who was at the organ, played the accompaniment for the selected hymns, “Jesu, Lover of my soul,” and “Guide me O Thou great Jehovah.”

The family mourners were: Mrs. GAIT (daughter); Miss Gladys SARGENT (daughter) was unable to attend owing to her illness; Mr. F. ROSSITER, Bathpool (brother); Mrs. H. J. PRING, Bathpool; and Mrs. A. H. BLACKMORE, West Monkton (sisters); Mr. H. J. PRING (brother-in-law); Mrs. F. ROSSITER (sister-in-law); Mrs. R. HURFORD, Mrs. I. PRIDDLE, Mr. C. ROSSITER, Mr. and Mrs. F. GREADY and Mr. E. C. BLACKMORE (nephews and nieces); Miss Eva GREADY, Miss Hilda GREADY and Miss Phyllis GREADY (great nieces), Mr. A. G. SARGENT, Draycott (cousin) and Miss HORNEY (friend). Mr. Geo. ROSSITER, of West Monkton (brother), Mr., Mrs. and Miss WILLIAMS of Longwell Green (nieces) and Mrs. CLARKE, of Midsomer Norton (sister-in-law) were unavoidably absent.

Friends present at the church and graveside included the Rev. Arthur E. JONES, Mrs. T. PAVEY, Miss Mabel SHELDON, Mrs. J. SCOURSE, Mrs. F. SCOURSE, Miss B. SCOURSE, Mrs. E. JEFFERIES and Mr. Tom PACKER.

The interment took place in the Methodist Cemetery at Cheddar where the committal sentences were read by the Rev. A. R. FULLER.

There were a number of beautiful floral tributes.

Messsrs. John Scourse and Sons of Cheddar carried out the funeral arrangements.
