THE NEW MAYOR. - A private meeting of the Taunton Town Council, convened by the Major (Ald. A. E. PERKINS), was held on Friday to consider who should be elected as Mayor for the ensuing year. Alderman PERKINS was asked to take the honour again, but he declined, and the Council decided to nominate Mr. J. STANDFAST for the position, those present pledging themselves to vote for his election.

FUNERAL OF MR. ROBERT BRUFORD. - The remains of the late Mr. Robert BRUFORD, of Kilkenny-villas, Rowbarton, Taunton, and formerly of Nerrols, Cheddon Fitzpaine, were cremated at Woking on Friday, and on Saturday afternoon the urn containing the ashes was interred in a grave in the picturesque churchyard of the little village of Cheddon Fitzpaine, where the deceased gentleman was born, and where he resided for so many years. The principal mourners were the three sons of the deceased – Messrs. Robert BRUFORD, jun., of Nerrols; John BRUFORD, of London; and William BRUFORD, of Nerrols. The Major of Taunton (Alderman A. E. PERKINS) and representatives of the various public bodies with which the deceased gentleman was connected were also present. There was a large number of beautiful wreaths. The officiating clergy were the Rev. R. PAYNE SMITH, rector of the parish, and the Rev. George RUCK, vicar of St. Andrew's, Rowbarton. The interment was followed by a muffled peal on the bells.
