PETTY SESSIONS. - Emma HAMPSHIRE was charged with being drunk and riotous, and also with assaulting P.C. LAMBERT, at Taunton. Fined 10s, including costs, for the first offence, and a fortnight's imprisonment for the second. - George VICKERY, on whom an attempt at murder was committed a few months since, was charged with having assaulted Aaron ARABFIELD, on the 25th September, in the Alma Inn, at Taunton. Defendant did not appear, and he was fined 12s, including costs. - John COX, of Weymouth, who did not appear, was ordered to pay a fine and costs of like amount for having assaulted Wm. STONE, at the Taunton Arms public-house. - SATURDAY. - John NOWELL, a labourer, who seemed in bad health, was summoned, on the complaint of the Rural Sanitary Authority, that he, being the occupier of a house at Monkton Heathfield, which was so overcrowded as to be injurious to health, had neglected to abate the said nuisance after having received notice so to do. The Medical Officer of Health said that on visiting the house on the 12th Sept., he found the defendant, his wife, and five children occupying one bedroom measuring 10ft. 3in. by 8ft. 3in. by 7ft. 6in. There was no fireplace in the room, the ventilation was very deficient, and the house was dilapidated and very dirty. Defendant was at that time confined to his bed by illness. Defendant now said he was too ill to work, and was in receipt of parish relief. He had tried to get another house and was unable. The Chairman said that, after the evidence of the Medical Officer, the Bench were responsible for ordering the overcrowding to be abated, and allowed one month for that purpose. Considering the ill-health of the defendant, the Bench advised him to take his family into the Workhouse for a time, where he would be more likely to recover his health. - WEDNESDAY. - George Charles, 12, and Isaac PARKHOUSE, 11, were ordered to be each imprisoned for a day, and to received six strokes with a birch rod for having stolen rags and bones, value 1s, from the store of Mr Wm. WOOD, at Firepool, on the 9th October. - Charles CURE, excavator, was charged with having assaulted John HILL, clerk of the works at the Taunton Sewage Works, on the 9th inst., and fined 10s and 8s costs.
