DEATH OF MR. J. P. STEEL. - The death occurred at his home, “Cranleigh,” St. Michael's-avenue, on Thursday, of a well-known and respected townsman in the person of Mr. James Peden STEEL. Deceased was a native of Chard, but in early life left that town and went to Ilminster, where he opened a business as a corn merchant. He came to Yeovil about half-a-century ago, continuing his business under the style of Steel & Company, and conducting it with considerable success. Deceased was a well-known figure on the Yeovil Corn Exchange, and in many West of England corn markets, notably Bristol, Salisbury, Bridport, Chard, and Dorchester. By his close touch with the markets and the conditions of the trade in the large area in which he did business he was regarded as an authority on all matters concerning it. The late Mr. STEEL took a great interest in public affairs, but was prevented from taking an active part by his infirmity of deafness. He was a member of the Baptist Church, and during his stay at Ilminster was a deacon of the Congregational Church there. Deceased, who was 73 years of age, leaves a widow and eight children (two sons and six daughters).
