NORTH PETHERTON.

A vestry meeting was held on Monday at the National schoolroom, the Rev. J. W. ROBINSON in the chair, for the purpose of electing an assistant overseer. The salary offered is £100 a year. There were seventeen candidates, the testimonials to whose fitness were all of a very high class. Only two, however, were proposed and seconded, Mr Walter H. DAVEY, of North Petherton, and Mr Samuel Collins BROWN, late of Stawell. On a division present, it was declared by the chairman that there was a majority in favour of Mr DAVEY, whereupon a poll was demanded on behalf of Mr BROWN, which was fixed to commence on the same day. The polling, which had been anticipated by the candidates and many of their friends, was very briskly carried on, and a great deal of excitement prevailed, vehicles being freely brought into requisition to convey voters to the polling-place. At the close the numbers were:- Mr DAVEY, 303; Mr BROWN, 223; majority for Mr DAVEY, 80. An objection has since been made to the confirmation of Mr DAVEY's appointment on the ground that he is a minor, and the point is still under consideration.
