MALICIOUS WOUNDING CHARGE

Pedlar Sent to Prison at Taunton

Sentence of two months' imprisonment in the second division was passed at Taunton Police Court yesterday on Wm. John SAUNDERS (37), pedlar, of no fixed abode, who was accused of maliciously wounding with a table knife a Taunton youth, Walter Edward OATEN, of 59, Baldwin Road.

OATEN, who appeared with his head bandaged, told the Bench that in the afternoon of June 17 he saw SAUNDERS chasing a number of children and holding a knife about his head.

Witness called to him to put the knife down, but he continued to chase the children, uttering threats and using bad language.

Witness told a friend to fetch a policeman, whereupon SAUNDERS dived at him with the knife, ripped his shirt off his back and cut his head. He had to go to the hospital to have the wound stitched.

Wm. Henry YARDE, labourer, of Wheatley Crescent, corroborated.

SAUNDERS, who pleaded not guilty, alleged that OATEN and YARDE interfered with him when he was having a meal in the lane.
