BECAME ENTANGLED IN MACHINERY

Taunton Inquest on Motor Mechanic

A verdict of “Death from misadventure” was returned at the inquest, at Taunton yesterday, on Fleetwood BOOBYER, a 36-year-old mechanic, of Burrowbridge, who sustained fatal injuries when he became entangled in the machinery of a small charging plant at a Burrowbridge garage.

It was stated in evidence that the starting wheel of the petrol engine in the charging room was not protected.

Mrs Mary Elizabeth BOOBYER, the widow, said that her husband had been working for Mr Edward STOREY, radio engineer, on certain days of the week, and that part of his duty was to attend to the accumulators.

STOREY told the coroner (Mr Geoffrey P. CLARKE) that BOOBYER had assisted him on two occasions. He had never given any instruction that BOOBYER should go to the charging room on the evening on which the accident happened. He had no authority to be there.

Bristol Barrister's Objection

Mr Cyril WILLIAMS, barrister, of Bristol, said that he would object to any questions being put to STOREY which might render him liable to a prosecution. If the factory inspector (Miss HASTINGS, Bristol) who was present, wished to take proceedings, it must be on evidence obtained in the ordinary way, and not through cross-examination.

In answer to a question by Miss HASTINGS, STOREY said that he knew that in factories fly-wheels had to be guarded, but he did not think the regulations applied where he was the owner of the machinery.

The coroner advised the jury to add no rider to their verdict.

If anyone wishes to take proceedings, we are not concerned with that,” he said. We have simply to ascertain the cause of death.”

A verdict was returned as stated.
