Shepton Beauchamp is a village and parish, 4 miles north-east from Ilminster station on the Chard branch of the Great Western railway and 5 1/2 north-west from Crewkerne, in the Yeovil division of the county, hundred of South Petherton, petty sessional division of Ilminster, rural district of Chard, county court district of Yeovil, rural deanery of Crewkerne (Ilminster district), archdeaconry of Taunton and diocese of Bath and Wells. Electricity is available. Water is supplied by the Chard Rural District Council. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Perpendicular and Decorated styles, consisting of chancel, lateral chapel, nave of three bays, aisles, north and south porches and a western tower containing a clock and 8 bells; a new clock was provided in 1893: there are 10 stained windows and several memorial brasses: there are 370 sittings. The register dates from 1558. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £360, including 8 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Community of the Resurrection, Mirfield, Yorks, and held since 1932 by the Rev. Frederick Burleigh Taylor M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There is a Methodist chapel, build in 1833. There are charities of about £50 yearly value, and also almshouses for seven aged persons, the gift of William Owsley, a former rector, who died in 1576: these almshouses have been condemned and are to be demolished and replaced by district council houses which will accommodate the displaced tenants. Vincent Lean esq. who is lord of the manor, and John H. England esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy loam, and the subsoil is limestone. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, oats and roots. The area is 841 acres; the population in 1931 was 578.
