George Ruggles was born ~ 1610 at England; George Ruggles of Braintree was son of John as we learn from Mass. Archives 39-323.1
He was the son of John Ruggles and Frances (?).
He married Elizabeth (?) ~ 1632.1
He was made freeman Mar. 4, 1633/4. In June 1637 he had a house lot in Boston and was given two acres for planting which years later he tried to recover at law but failed to do so (Mass. Arch. Vol. 39). He had land at Braintree as a grantee, and sold the lot there to the Iron Works Co. Sep. 29, 1645 on Monatiquot River (S. D. 1:62). He resided in present Quincy near Elm & South Sts. and his land was mentioned in 1652 when the latter was laid out, and again in 1655 when a foot way, now Miller Stile Road was laid out.1
He died ~ Jun 1669 at Braintree, Norfolk, MA.1
Jul. 27, 1669: Administration on George Ruggles given to Elizabeth his widow on behalf of herself and "seaven" children. 5:161, Inventory, Jun. 18, 1669: Personal estate only listed. Articles in the parlor, in the hall, in the chamber, in the cellar, in the shop, a loom, etc. S. P. 5:162.1 He was a weaver by trade as shown in his inventory taken Jun. 18, 1669 and widow Elizabeth was made Administrator Jul. 27, 1669 and she petitioned that son Samuel might have half the house as his father desired. His lot, evidently a grant to him, appears in the Iron Works inventory of 1653 as "Young Ruggles lot", 30 acres, along with "Old Ruggles lot", evidently his father. None of the grants along Monatiquot River east of the railroad are of record now. There were several of them however.1 The Ruggles family of Roxbury came from Nazing, Co. Essex, England, where it is possible George Ruggles of Braintree may belong, but more likely he came from Sudbury or vicinity, Co. Suffolk where several Braintree settlers including Martin Saunders and Robert Parmenter came from. There was a George Ruggles in 1592 assessment list there as shown in the Genealogical Magazine Vol. 3. A George Ruggles m. Elizabeth Bateson 1633 at Belchamp Walter, Co. Essex (Boyd Index). There was a George Ruggles in 1592 tax list at Sudbury Co. Suffolk (Gen. Mag. Vol. 3).1 |

Braintree Families claims that John is the father of George but Great Migration feels that they are brothers. There is also a Jeffrey Ruggles who came in 1630, who is probably related.2,1 John Ruggles was born at possibly, Glemsford, Suffolk, England; according to Col. Charles E. Banks.1,2 He married Frances (?).1 He came with the Winthrop Fleet in 1630 and settled in Boston.1 He was made freeman of the colony July 1632. Not much is known of him and he is last mentioned in the records of the Book of Possessions in 1646.1 He evidently had a grant of land at Braintree, south of Monatiquot River, in the 1653 inventory of the Iron Works called "Old Ruggles lot" 20 acres.1 He died b 21 Jan 1656/57 at Boston, MA; date of inventory.2 |
