CITY CEMETERY

ROANOKE, VA

My great great grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Arthur Byrd (Bird), b 1857 - d 1947, is buried at the Roanoke City Cemetery.  I visited the cemetery with my 2 of my uncles (both now deceased), one of whom was present when she was buried & he believed she was buried in a certain area of the cemetery, but we could not find a headstone for her.  I later discovered that the Roanoke City Engineer's office had the records for this cemetery & wrote to them for help.  In response, they mailed me a copy of the map that they have of the cemetery (at no charge -- very helpful & nice -- special thanks to those nice folks).  Unfortunately, they had no other information and told me that the names on the map could either be individuals who purchased the plots or the actual individuals buried there -- they have no way of knowing.

Enter cemetery from Tazewell Avenue (North) onto "Middle Driveway" (20 ft. wide).  There is also a "South Driveway" (22 ft. wide) running horizontally at the lower 1/4 of the cemetery.

There are several "walkways" than run vertically in the cemetery:

"West Walkway" is at the far west side, 10 ft. wide (no graves shown further west side of this walkway)
"Middle West Walkway", 11 ft. wide (graves on both west & east sides of this walkway)
"Middle East Walkway", 11 ft. wide (graves on both west & east sides of this walkway)
"East Walkway" is at the far East side, 10 ft. wide (graves on the west side of this walkway & the length of the east side is marked as being "Filled with graves mostly unknown")

Most plots appear to be divided into square quadrants.  A few are whole, halves, or 1/4 & 3/4.  Most plots have a circled number in the center.  Some of the numbers are not in order & they begin at the top left of the cemetery entrance.  For ease in transcribing & reading the transcription, I will start the list with the plot at the top left of the cemetery (this one has no number & is an odd shape) & transcribe to the right.  The plot numbers from the map will follow each name in parentheses.  If it is a plot with a number & divided into quadrants, I will state the circled number & use the letters a - d to describe the quadrants (a=top left; b=top right; c=bottom left; d=bottom right).
