Re: Southalls in North Carolina, circa 1972

SOUTHALL FAMILY

Genealogical Research
Report #2

Researcher: Mrs. John [Mary Hinton] Kerr, Jr.
[street address deleted by Susan Shields Sasek]
Warrenton, NC

INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM MRS. LOUISE K. MINOR (hereafter called client):
1. Copy of genealogical chart prepared by Dr. James Southall, retired Professor at University of Virginia on which he gives credit mostly to Dr. Stephen Southall, deceased Episcopal Rector of Amelia (Co.?), Va., a professional genealogist.
2. Census readings by Mrs. H. G. Ray, showing southalls in Federal Census for 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840 in North Carolina counties (not entirely complete); also one marriage and five deaths from Raleigh Register (newspaper)
3. Copy of DAR Lineage - National No. 119499
4. Copy of Application for pension - and application for a grant of land - from HENRY SOUTHALL for service in the Revolutionary War.

(All of the above is returned herewith; I have taken copies for my files.
I have written to my brother who is on the faculty at UVa. in an attempt to get a more legible copy of Dr. James Southall's chart)

The attached four pages contain my attempt to reconcile what is given on Dr. Southall's chart with what the records show in your direct line.
My conclusions are not fully documented, but only insofar as I can do with what the records I have available show.

One EDWARD SOUTHALL bought land in Edgecombe Co., N.C. in 1746. Was he the father of the Daniel Southall later in Gates Co., N.C. and Hertford Co., N.C.?
I went to Franklin Co., N.C. in an effort to find whether Holman lived there when your William Henry was born - and all I could find was deed, 12 Feb. 1812, when Daniel Southall & Patience his wife of Gates Co., N.C. (she being daughter of Col. John Branch of Halifax Co., N.C.) sold her interest in the land her father owned in Franklin Co., where her mother Elizabeth was living.. . . .

You asked me whether there were people of the name of TURNER, HENDLEY, HAMNER, NEAL, REAVES, CUNNINGHAM, HART & MABRY in Warren Co. now. We have a number of TURNERS but there were two distinct families of Turners here early. There are some Mabrys here - and a number of Neals - no Hendleys or Hamners or Hart or Cunningham. There were some Reaveses (pronounced Revvis with accent on first syllable) but I don't know any here now.

Do you have a copy of the original letter of Mary Turner Rives to her son Robert? If so, I would like to be able to get a copy of it. I have a poor copy of a typed reading of this letter which I got from the Archives in Raleigh, but it appears to have been changed in some places.

I would really like to check the Halifax Co., N.C. and Northampton Co., N.C. records for you - if you want me to - because they should show further information about your Southalls, but I don't think I will be able to do it until some time in June or July. I am planning a trip to England and Scotland in May and find the time slipping up on me so can't undertake anything further until my return. If I find that I can get to Halifax Co. - or Northampton - I will look anyway - for my own satisfaction.

I will be interested to know what your reaction is to this summary evn [sic] though I will not have much more time for attention to your matters until later on. I do hope that your interesting papers will arrive safely; I am so dubious about the handling of the mail.

Best wishes - and thank you for getting me interested in these interesting people. Was Douglas Southall Freeman in Richmond connected with your family?

Sincerely -

Mary Hinton Kerr
