Southall Manuscript

Prepared by Sallie Southall Cotten, ca. 1916
Re: Descendants of James and Elizabeth Southall and other Southall Family Notes

[Page 2]

SOUTHALL NAME

A genealogist who had studied nomenclature told me that the name Southall was a name of great antiquity in Ireland, where it was originally Southwell, and is spelt in Burke's Peerage variously as Sowel, S[u]thall, Southwell and Southall, all being without doubt the same name. In land grants in Virginia the name is found spelled Southwell.

Mr. D'Arcy, of Limerick Co. Ireland, was a lineal descendant of William D'Arcy of Platin, whose father John D'Arcy (Lord D'Arcy) was a great celebrity in the reigns of Edward I, Edward II and Edward III. Lord D'Arcy's second wife was Joan, daughter of the Earl of Ulster.

Sir Richard Southwell's second wife was Mary Dar[s]y, daughter of Thomas Darcy, Esq. of Danbury. Left a son -- Richard.

Richard Southwell, Esq. (may or may not have been the son Richard of above couple) of Horsham St. Faiths in Norwich was g.g.g. grandfather to Sir Richard Southwell, who was so distinguished in 1690 -- died in 1702.

Note that Sir Richard Southwell married Mar[y] Darcy. Was perhaps related to D'Arcy of Limerick Co., Ireland (See *) the double capitals and the comma being no doubt omitted from carelessness. This probabl[y] explained name of Darc[y] -- Dacey and Das[y] Southall of Henrico Co. -- the first Southal[l] in Va.

I received a photocopy of this manuscript 17 Feb 1990 from Virginia Roberts. Transcribed by Susan Shields Sasek. Some portions of my copy are difficult to read as it appears to be photocopy of a typewritten carbon copy. Anything in brackets in my transcription [ ] are either my notes, items I am unsure about or cannot read.] As with all genealogical material, you should verify information whenever possible with the source or original document[s].
