Extract from “Virginia Cousins”

Dr. Philip Francis Southall of “Woodstock” Amelia Co., Va., son of Dr. Philip Turner and Frances Lockett Southall; grandson of Maj. Stephen and Martha Wood Southall; great grandson of Col. Turner Southall of Fairfield, Henrico Co., Va., was born Apr. 6, 1822, at “Selina” Amelia Co., Va., the residence of his father? married Dec. 16, 1845 Eliza Jane Goode who was born May 17, 1821.

Children: Philip Turner, Robert Goode, Stephen Osborne (died young), Frances Turner, Francis, Rev. Stephen Osborne, Mary Eliza.

“Dr. Southall (brother of Prof. S.O. Southall of the University of Virginia, grandson of Col. Turner Southall of Henrico Co., and great grandson of Lucy, the sister of Patrick Henry) is the principal physician in Amelia Co., and a communicant and vestryman of Trinity Parish, Chesterfield Co.”

A genealogy of the Southall family was published by Mr. R.A. Brock in the Richmond Standard, Oct. 9, 1880. Dasey or Daisy Southall, ancestor of the family in Virginia lived in Henrico Co. 1751-1755. Among his descendants are mentioned Col. James Southall of the Revolutionary Army; Hon. Valentine W. Southall;; Richard Henry Southall; Prof. S.O. Southall L.L.D. (brother of Philip Francis) of the University of Virginia; Capt. Francis Winston Southall (brother of Philip Francis) of Stuart’s Cavalry, C.S.A.; Capt. Valentine W. Southall, Stonewall Brigade C.S.A., killed at Gettysburg; James Cocke Southall L.L.D. (cousin of Philip Francis) editor of Central Presbyterian; Col. Stephen Valentine Southall, Adjutant First Division C.S.A.

A half sister of Dr. P.F. Southall, Lucy Henry Southall, married Richard Wood, and had a son, Philip Southall Wood, Commonwealth’s Attorney of Amelia, who married Emma Pride.”
