Pioneering families of the Bay or Quinte Why I am interested in this family. Phoebe Lake, daughter of Nicholas Lake, married a John Smith so I needed to know more about Nicholas Lake to help identify which John Smith she married. It is my conclusion that Phoebe Lake married John Smith, the son of James Smith Esq, who first settled at the mouth of the Trent River. See the argument more fully developed in section 9 of the above web page on James Smith Esq. In 1797 Nicholas petitions that he has 10 children and interestingly all ten survived to adulthood and petitioned as sons and daughters of the loyalist. They are identified below with transcriptions of the records found so far. More contemporary records are welcome - send them along if you wish. | 1. OVERVIEW Nicholas Lake is mistakenly identified in a number of on line lineages as being born on 18 May 1755, White Creek, Rensselaer Co., New York. Below is evidence that he was born about 1750 in Somerset Co, NJ and his parents were John Lake and Margaret Snyder. Nicholas married Rhoda Broadwell. Rhoda is named in the Family Bible of Mary (Reed) Pake, bought in 1842, now in possession of Bessie Mifflin, Picton (1999). Source: Family, Yours, Mine & Ours by John E. Holden, Utah, 1999. A copy is available from the Canadiana Room, North York Library, Toronto (929.2 Holden) and the Quinte Branch OGS in Trenton, page 140 The baptisms of their first five children name the parents as Nicholas Leek/Leeck/Lake and Rhoda Bradwel/Broadwel while residing in White Creek, Washington Co., NY and the children were baptized 18 miles away in Schaghticoke, Rensselaer, NY. Other records show that the 6th and 7th children were also born in NY and the last three children were born in Upper Canada. Nicholas Lake is confirmed in affidavits to be the eldest son of John Lake Senior UE. In Nicholas's two petitions and one Loyalist Claim he states that he joined in 1777 under General Burgoyne, was taken prisoner after Burgoyne's defeat and employed in intelligence. He also states that he was a private in Col Peters Regiment. In 1797 he declares that he has a wife and ten children, 3 are boys and the youngest is 3, with one married. In the various petitions of his children it is stated that he first settled in Ernestown and then later in Sidney Township. A few also declare that he was "late of Thurlow" at the end of his life. The Aug 1803 petition of his daughter Hannah states that Nicholas is deceased. This is the earliest record determining his death to be before Aug 1803. |
| 2. PARENTS: JOHN LAKE and MARGARET SNYDER Many genealogies have John Lake and Margaret Snyder as the parents of Nicholas Lake but none seen so far cite their sources. Debra North has traced the family as it moved from Somerset NJ in 1761 to White Creek, Washington Co., NY. Another source worth examining is Dr HC Burleigh Fonds, online at Queens Univ, Hogle/Lake folder, pages 8-10. It outlines the will of grandfather Nicholas Lake and has a lineage of descendants. A major resource is A genealogy of the Lake family of Great Egg Harbour in Old Gloucester County in New Jersey, Adams, Arthur; Risley, Sarah Anna, 1915, online at archive.org This John Lake was the son of an older Nicholas Lake and the family lived in NJ. The baptism of their son Christopher indicates the location in 1755 and they were still in NJ in 1761 when James was baptized. Debra North found an informative and delightful account of the first Six Mile Run church from 1717 to 1767 that describes the primitive conditions for worship that the Lake family would have experienced. John Lake Sr had brothers James, Nicholas, Thomas and a sister Mary who married Arent Van Corlaer. These four brothers and sister and their families moved to the Van Corlaer Patent , Town of White Creek NY by 1761. They are named in an assessment on 21 Nov 1761. This John Lake was the Loyalist. Debra North writes that, "I believe John Lake and Margaret Snyder’s children are: Elizabeth circa 1748 (widow of Captain John Hogle who died at Saratoga 1777), Maria b 1749 (who married James Perrott/Parrott UE), Nicholas circa 1750 UE, Thomas UE circa 1753, Christopher UE baptized 1755, John UE circa 1759, James UE baptized 17 May 1760, and Mary circa 1768." Nicholas Lake’s parentage is indicated through the estate of his sister Mary Parrott wife of Lt Col James Parrott. In 1818 Mary applied for land as the daughter of John Lake UEL. Mary or Maria's later headstone at Fourth Line United Church Cemetery in Ernestown states she died 10 Nov 1819 aged 70 yrs 8 mos. This gives her a birth date of about Mar 1749. Her father therefore would be John Lake Sr. UEL and not John Lake Jr UEL. Loyalist that she is married to James Perrott Esquire late Lieutenant Colonel of the Addington Militia ... prays for 200 acres ..." [fold 89c] recommended DUE Book J, p. 482 Source: UCLP, RG1 L3, LAC, V 404, P11/89, C-2135, starts at image 125 The key evidence stating that Nicholas Lake is the son of John Lake Senior is contained in a 29 page bundle of documents starting in 1850 where the will of James Parrott is contested. It is repetitive with a number of affidavits and requires careful reading. [41d] 28 Feb 1850, Petition of James Lake, Sidney, that by the will of James Parrott your petitioner along with his brother John Lake, now deceased, was devised of lot 27 Con 1 Otonabee ... was located by the wife of James Parrott ... has been patented to nother person ... [41e and 41f] 25 Jul 1851, James Lake and John Lake sons of the late Nicholas Lake .... Mary Perrott of Ernestown wife of the late James Parrott and daughter of late John Lake UE was located 3 jan 1820 for lot 27 Con 1 Otonabee ... lt was in the year 1830 granted to Mr Lanhins? Burnham ... petition of Nicholas Lake of Rawdon Tp ... [41g] 15 Jul 1850 Affidavit of Mary Fellows who was well acquainted with her Aunt Mary Parrott wife of late Lt Col James Parrott ... believes she died in March 1820 Affidavit of Nathan Fellows JP confirming his wife Mary Fellows is correct Affidavit of Jane Lake widow of the late Benjamin Lake of Ernestownwas acquainted with her Aunt Mary Parrott ... and that she died in Mar or April of 1819 or 1820. [41j] 7 August 1850, John Ness of Rawdon Tp yeoman makes oath that Nicholas Lake Esq of Rawdon is the only son of Richard Lake late of Rawdon who died in 1817 and who was the eldest son of Nicholas Lake late of Sidney who died about 40 years ago and who was the eldest brother of Mary Parrott wife of James Parrott of Ernestown Esquire that the said Nicholas Lake was the eldest son of the the late John Lake Senior of Ernestown a UE loyalist that the same Nicholas lake Esq or the heir at law to the same mary Parrott who was at the time of her death entitled 200 cares of land. [41l] 24 Aug 1850, Nicholas Lake of Rawdon Esq makes oath he is the only son of Richard Lake of rawdon, yeoman, who died in 1817 and who was the eldest son of Nicholas Lake lat of Sidney who died about 40 years ago who was the eldest brother of Mary Parrott .... [41n] 21 Jul 1851 Joseph Green makes oath .... Richard Lake died about 1827 and that Nicholas Lake the father of Richard died about 1820 or 1821 without making any will [41o] 19 May 1851, Lewis Rosebush, Sidney, makes oath acquainted with Nicholas Lake of Rawdon Esq ... is the only son of Richard Lake .... [41q] 15 Oct 1850, [41s] 7 Aug 1850, Adam H Meyers, supports Nicholas lake J.P. of Rawdon is the grandson and heir at law of Nicholas Lake deceased eldest brother of Mary Perrott [41u] 2 Apr 1851, Nicholas Lake of Rawdon .... Mary Perrot died without children [41v and 41w] 1 Aug 1851 Committee recommends that the suggestion of the Commissioner of Crown Lands be approved and carried into effect. Approved in Council same day. The Commissioner reviews all the above affidavits and concludes that Nicholas Lake of Rawdon's claim should be subject to his father Richard Lake estate being proved. Debra North wrote, "The Council’s decision was that James’ Parrott’s will should not be followed as the land was given to Mary not as his wife but as John Lake’s daughter and therefore it should go to her heir." [41x] 5 Aug 1850, claim by James Lake of Sidney son of John Lake ... There is a Nicholas Lake who died at Bennington in 1777. Debra North writes, "John Lake Sr UE of Ernestown, in addition to having a brother and a son named Nicholas, also had 2 other brothers who named a son Nicholas, all lived in the same area of NY. These later 2 men were about the same age as Nicholas UEL so they could have been the one killed. The record of the death is in James Parrott military diaries that are kept at Queen's University in Kingston, ON." |

NICHOLAS LAKE RECORDS 1788 LOYALIST CLAIMS 27 Feb 1788, claim of John Lake; Elizabeth Hogal [Hogle], widow of Capt John Hogal, and Nicholas Lake Jr. It is not stated in the claim but John is the father of Elizabeth and Nicholas Jr. All claim for compensation. Nicholas Lake late of Cambridge District, Albany Co, New York Province, says that in 1783 ...sent a claim to capt Covell to Saftsbury VT and from thence to NY it is dated in Dec 1783. He is a native of NJ when war broke out he lived in Cambridge, joined Burgoyne at Shenesborough and remained with him till the convention when he returned home and has resided in the States ever since, he came to St Johns after Peace and staid 3 days and returned, he is now come to settle. Thos Lake sworn Uncle says claimant joined Burgoyne in 1777 was taken prisoner and kept under Bonds ever since. Capt Justus Sherwood says claimant joined his company in 1777 and behaved well - after the Convention he was desired to stay in the Country for some months for intelligence, but farther he cannot say. John Langhorn, OGS, Kingston, 1980, p. 4 HEADSTONE CONFUSION A headstone in the Longwell Cemetery reads, "John Longwell U.E.L, 1757-1841, His wife, Margaret Lake U.E.L, 1760-1847" In 2013, Brain Lake sent a photo of this headstone and concluded that "Margaret could not be a child of Nicholas and Rhody" if she was born in 1760 and Nicholas was born c1755. However Margaret does clearly petition as a daughter of Nicholas Lake. Perhaps the birth date on the headstone is incorrect. Brian goes on to write that, "I am not sure where I got the info but I have Margaret born 1773 and died in 1847. That sounds more reasonable." Source: email from Brian Lake, including photo of headstone, Nov 2013 The above headstone issue was revisited by Debra North and she found the baptizm of Margaret Leek in 1774 with the birth date of 9 Jan 1773. It is concluded that the headstone with Margaret born in 1760 is in error as it is a later memorial stone and those who erected it did not have her correct birth date. Debra noted that there is an older headstone for John Longwill in the same Longwell Cemetery. 2. Phoebe Lake BIRTH In the 1803 Murray census, the wife of John Smith is named as Polly and given the age of 24. In 1808 she is named as Phebe. It is my contention that Polly is an error and his wife was Phebe all along. At 24 in 1803 she would be born about 1779. Phoebe was born on 3 Sept 1775, parents Nicholas Leeck and Rhoda Broadwel and baptized in 1776 according to Debra North. Doug Smith, a descendant of Richard Smith, wrote in March 2017 that, "I recently submitted my DNA to Ancestry and got this match to a Lake descendant. I know we have not had proof such as a marriage document for Richard and Elizabeth, but possibly this DNA link is proof enough." This is excellent support for Richard Smith and Elizabeth Lake to be the above couple until evidence is found to refute this conclusion. |
