Linda Herman has done most of the work below in an effort to support the conclusion that Nancy Ann Millar [Miller], c1765- 1836, who married Joseph Clapp, is the daughter of Garret Miller, 1729-77, and Patience Griswold, 1738-c1807, of Orange Co., NY. This conclusion has been suggested by others and in 2000, Janet Kellough informed me of her similar reasoning. Linda has made an extensve study of this Miller family and it is her work that is being shared.

1. NANCY ANN MILLER, the daughter of GARRET MILLER & PATIENCE GRISWOLD
My latest project is Nancy Ann Millar Clapp w/o Joseph Clapp. There are those of us who think that Nancy Ann is the sister of Elizabeth Miller, who married Philip Roblin, though there is no definitive proof.
 
The key piece of evidence states that Joseph Clapp is the brother in law of Elizabeth Roblin, widow of Philip Roblin. This means that Nancy Ann Clapp and Elizabeth Roblin are sisters. The statement comes from the 1862 book below. It is repeated in an article titled, Hay Bay Church First Canadian Methodist Church from The Napanee Beaver, Nov 8, 1901.

[1791] "Two miles west of Paul Huff's where the meetings on the Hay Bay were held, lived a widow with her four sons and four daughters. Philip Roblin, her husband died in 1788"
[1792] "Elizabeth Roblin is the widow already mentioned."
"Joseph Clapp was the brother-in-law of widow Roblin and lived in the fourth town."

On my side of this argument I have the following:

  1. The above record stating that Joseph Clapp is the brother-in-law of Elizabeth [Miller] Roblin.
  2. Elizabeth Roblin emigrated to Upper Canada with three of her siblings.
  3. Joseph Clapp and Hampton Miller, shared a crown patent in Richmond in 1805 ... Hampton Miller is the brother of Elizabeth Miller and Nancy Ann Clapp and thus also a brother in law to Joseph Clapp.
  4. Joseph Clapp and Nancy Ann name a daughter Patience - after her mother; a son Samuel - after her brother, who also came to Canada; Philip after Philip Roblin, brother-in-law.
  5. The Miller siblings give the following names to some of their children.
    • Elizabeth Roblin [later marries John Canniff] names daughters Mary and Nancy Ann
    • Sarah names daughters Nancy and Katie
    • Samuel Miller m. Mary Canniff, names daughters Nancy and Catherine
    • Catherine Garrison names a daughter Nancy
    • Nancy Ann Clapp names a daughter Catherine
    • Hampton Miller names a daughter Katherine

I have noticed something else, it is said that Nancy Ann Miller came to Canada with Elizabeth and Philip Roblin ... so I am trying to find a copy of the manifest of the Hope with the 1783 sailing to see if there is a Nancy Ann Miller on the manifest and if by chance there are any other Millers on the manifest. A search of the Haldimand Papers has not found a Miller listed on the ships or at Sorel, Quebec in 1783. A list of those victualed on the Hope does not name anyone of the Miller or Roblin.

Patent fees were paid by a J Clapp & H? Miller in Richmond Township. Others records will be checked to clarify this record.

Looking at Garret Miller’s will dated 1777 [he died of smallpox according to Peter Johnson], he lists his children; Joshua, Mary, Elizabeth, Garrett, Nathan, Sarah, Samuel, Anne, Hampton, and Jeremiah .... and usually in the will the children are listed in order of age or boys first in order of age and then girls in order of age. It looks like Mary is the oldest daughter therefore born before 1754 the date of Elizabeth's birth which would make Mary Miller w/o Peter Miller who is born 1762 too young to be our Mary. And it is only because Ann Carpenter and Mary Miller w/o Peter Miller are sisters that people have placed them in the family of Garret Miller....which was a Miller family with daughters Ann and Mary.

Both Absolam and Phoebe, also children of Garret Miller and Patience Griswold, were dead by 1777 and not mentioned in Garret's will. That leaves only Mary and Jeremiah unaccounted for. It is interesting to note that there are two boys under 16 living with George Fowler and Patience in 1790 ... one may be Jeremiah but it looks like George and Patience had at least one son if not two. She was only 39 at the time of Garrett's death so I guess that makes sense. Can't find any sons for them though.

Janet Kellough has commented on the marriage of Joseph Clapp and Nancy Millar probably being in Upper Canada. Janet wrote that "the story on Nancy Miller is that she came to Canada with the Roblin Family (four different branches), who were all from either New Jersey or Orange County, N.Y. so the two were unlikely ever to have met beforehand. (Again repeated widely). George Playter's "History of Methodism" definitely says that Joseph Clapp was a brother-in-law of "the Widow Roblin", who is Elizabeth Miller who married Philip Roblin. In the early years of settlement, the only clergyman who was legally able to marry anyone was the Rev. John Langhorn at Kingston, and I can find records of Benjamin Clapp marrying, but not Joseph Clapp. The only wrinkle in this is that the British did accept a Quaker marriage rite, but Nancy Miller was not a Quaker and more to the point, the Adolphustown Meeting was not sanctioned until 1798. I suppose it's worthwhile checking to see if there is a marriage license in Dutchess County, but if there is, then Nancy can't be the daughter of Garrett Miller." [email, March 2000]

Lastly, in Oct 2015, Linda Smith discovered the record below stating that Joseph Clapp died on 30 Nov 1812. His wife, Nancy Miller, is named Nancy Short. It is most likely that she remarried. The children named are known sons of Joseph Clapp and Nancy Miller from other records.

The war pension board report reads as follows:
Board appointed ... to examine into and report the claims of such widows and children, in the Midland District, whose husbands and fathers may have died of Disease contracted on Service
23 April 1817, Kingston
5. Nancy Short, heretofore widow of Joseph Clapp, private Militia Man of Prince Edward Militia, who died 30th Nov 1812, of disease contracted while on duty as a militia man at Kingston; certified by Captain Owen Richards of the same battalion: Prays to be admitted on the pension list as guardian to her children James Clapp, George Clapp, Samuel Clapp, and Joseph Clapp, all under sixteen years of age. ... 2. JOSHUA MILLER confused with NATHAN MILLER, child of Garret Miller
I have also recently found what happened to Joshua Miller, about whom little was known. Many people had Joshua confused with Nathan Miller and had him married to Rachel Smith and murdered in 1779 however Joshua is actually married to Jerusha Smith, who is a d/o Austin Smith and a cousin to Rachel Smith who is d/o Francis Smith. The following proves this and tells us that Joshua too was dead by 1781.....and I wonder if he wasn't murdered by the Claudius Smith gang as was his brother Nathan.

It appears that there were no children of this marriage and that Jerusha remarried about 1785 to John Mott. They lived in Patchoque, Brookhaven, Suffolk Co., New York where she died in 1808.

Nathan Miller married Rachel Smith Feb 26, 1778 in a triple marriage (his sister Sarah married John Burgis and Rachel's sister Elizabeth Smith married John Wegant the same day in the same church) in the Presbyterian Church in New Windsor, Orange County, New York. Nathan was murdered 1779 by the Claudius Smith Gang.
"On Saturday night, the 6th instant, were taken at the house of Nathan Miller, in Smith's Clove, James Smith (son of Claudius Smith, a notorius offender, who was executed at Goshen the 22d ult.) [January 22, 1779] and one Benson of Long Island. These villains, in conjunction with Claudius, had committed many daring robberies. They are now safely lodged in jail."


Nathan Miller was found murdered on the road from Smith's Clove to Monroe about this same time (from family history documents), he was about 22 years old. He was a Corp. under Capt. Francis Smith and helped save Capt Smith's life during the battle of Fort Montgomery. Nathan went on to marry Capt. Smith's daughter Rachel on February 26, 1778 (see records of the New Windsor Presby. church). Rachel Smith Miller gave birth to a daughter, Julia Miller, sometime between December 1778 and Oct. 1779. In 1781 she married James Rumsey (a Loyalist) and they would move to Canada but return to New York in 1786.

There is a "manuscript", "Information from J. S. Mapes of Syracuse Nebraska, dated February 17,1894"
pages 2-5 of this manuscript are missing.
Page one: "The records in the co clk's office of Goshen show that he (Claudius Smith) was charged only with robbery and that he was sentenced to be executed for robbery, but it is believed that he killed Major Strong and private Joshua Miller of the Revolutionary army, and many other murders are charged to him."
then page six says he (Joshua Miller *** NOTE- this is an error, it should be Nathan) discovered Claudius and several known to belong to the gang approaching his house. He fled to the rocks. His widow afterwards stated that the hiding place had been selected a few days before and that he passed his nights there. She brought him breakfast and was followed by the gang. On the way home, she heard shots and returned to find her husband dead. This manuscript says Joshua (Nathan) was killed in 1779.  Claudius was hanged on Jan 13, 1779, so if he killed Joshua "it was by proxy".

3. NANCY ANN MILLER wife of JOHN CARPENTER
There are others that think Nancy Ann Carpenter w/o John Carpenter (they went to Virginia) is the d/o Garret Miller and Patience Griswold. They have no proof either but base their beliefs on the fact that Nancy Carpenter has a sister Mary Miller who married Peter Miller and they believe she is Garrett's daughter Mary (no proof there either). Unfortunately there is nothing to indicate what happened to Mary. They go to Virginia which does not make sense for this family and none of the names of their children are similar to those of the Garret Miller children.

The pension application for Peter Miller says the only sibling of this Mary Miller (and yes Mary Miller married Peter Miller who was a son of Henry Miller, who is the brother of Garret Miller) still living is Ann Miller/Carpenter ... but Garret's son Hampton does not die until 1857... this is another small point that supports the premise that Mary Miller w/o Peter Miller is not Garret's daughter as has always been believed. Here is a transcription of the affidavit.

Virginia Marion County
February the 25th 1845
The following affadavit was taken by the undersigned a Justice of the Peace in the aforesaid county of Marion.
Ann Carpenter of said County being sworn upon interogations, sayeth that she is in her seventy sixth year that she was raised in the state of New York that she has lived in virginia upwards of forty years that she is the only sister or brother of Mary Miller that is now living that Mary Miller was the wife of Peter Miller late of Monongahela County. That she was present at the marriage of Peter Miller and her sister Mary at the town of Goshen in the state of New York that she knew that Peter Miller was a soldier in the revolution & understood & has a right to believe he drew a pension. That the said Peter Miller and her sister mary intermarried about sixty years since. That Mary Miller now lives in Marion county Virginia (a new county taken off of Monongahela & Hereson [Harrison]) on the farm where her husband Peter Miller died some years since.

4. MARY CATHERINE MILLER, wife of WILLIAM GARRISON
We now have the will of George Fowler which shows us one of Garret's daughters married a Garrison....as George Fowler leaves a bequest to "Hampton son of my deceased wife Patience and to Garret Garrison grandson of my said wife."

Garret had 5 daughters:
1. Elizabeth married Philip Roblin
2. Sarah married John Burgis  (we have her marriage Feb 26, 1778...New Windsor Presbyterian Church Records)
3. Phoebe is dead before 1777....she is not in the will of Garret Miller in 1777
4. Nancy Ann Miller married Joseph Clapp

This leaves only daughter Mary.

Garret Garrison is the son of William Garrison. We have a marriage for William Garrison and Katherine Miller Feb 5, 1784 in Cornwall, Orange Co., N.Y. recorded in the Journal of Silas Constant, pg 18.

Again looking at naming patterns in the family of Garret Miller we find:
Sarah names daughters Katie, Patience, Nancy, Betsy and sons Nathan and Hampton,
Samuel names daughters Catherine, Nancy Ann, Patience, Elizabeth, Phoebe,
Nancy Ann names daughters Catherine, Sarah, Patience and sons Philip, George, Samuel,
Hampton names daughters Katherine and Sarah.

Elizabeth and Garret Jr are not as helpful, they name daughters Mary ... did she go by Mary at one point and Catherine at the time of her marriage ... who knows. We do know that it is not unusual for people to change the name that they are called ... we have seen it often.

Catherine Miller and William Garrison name children Garret, after her father; Nancy after her sister. We see that the name Catherine arises with consistency.

It has been accepted that Mary d/o Garret Miller was the Mary Miller who married Peter Miller. But looking at this we find an affadavit of Nancy Ann Carpenter (wife of John Carpenter) in the pension application of Peter that says she was at the marriage of Mary and Peter and that she is the sister of Mary. We know this Nancy Ann is not the daughter of Garret.....it also states in the pension that Nancy Ann is the only living sibling of Mary (in 1845) but Hampton does not die until 1857. Both of these facts are in conflict with this Mary being Garret's daughter. Peter and Mary were married in Goshen May 5, 1785. The location of the marriage plus the fact that Nancy Ann and Mary were sisters, and that Garret had daughters Ann and Mary are the facts that were used to place Mary in Garret's family. We must remember that there were at least 4 Miller families in the area. We know the particulars of Garret's family and that of Henry Miller, his brother and Peter's father. We know nothing of John Miller's family, and of William Miller we know only that he was a deacon in the church and that he had at least 4 children, with Elizabeth being the only name of these children that we know. So the fact that Mary and Nancy Ann Miller came from Orange County does not put them automatically into Garret's family. Dennis Miller is the authority on the Miller family and it was he who placed Mary Miller w/o Peter Miller as the daughter of Garret but at the time he did this he did not have the information we now have re Nancy Ann and "Catherine" wife of William Garrison.

I think we can safely conclude that "Catherine" who married William Garrison is Mary Catherine d/o Garret Miller.

Lastly, there are some researchers who have suggested that Nancy Ann Clapp married a second time to John Carpenter. Joseph Clapp does not die until 1813. Ann and John Carpenter have their first son John in 1786. In addition we have the headstone for Nancy Ann Clapp who died July 14, 1836 in Milford, Prince Edward Co., Ontario. It says Nancy wife of Joseph Clapp. A second marriage doesn't work.

Some have solved the problem of Nancy Ann and Joseph Clapp by marrying Nancy off a second time to John Carpenter in support of the marriage of Mary Miller and Peter Miller knowing that Nancy Ann Carpenter is a sister of this Mary. This does not fit the facts.

Note: I find a Danile Miller b. before 1740 of Smith's Cove, Orange Co, NY. Listed among his 14 children are daughters Nancy and Mary ... no one seems to know what became of them.

In 2021, Darrel Miller sent this information below about Samuel Miller and Mary Canniff. Samuel was added to the UE List in 1836 and his lengthy petiton is very interesting.

[66d] Adolphustown 22nd June 1835 John I Leckie Esq Sir, I take this opportunity of forwarding to you
Daniel McMullen affidavits to prove that I settled in this providence in the year 1798 and have always
resided therein, and have done my duty faithfully during the late war and that I served his majesty
faithfully during the revolutionary war. Which I request you to attach to my petition praying to be placed
on the UE list and lay before the council and all the proof of my services now in the council office for
which services I received a grant of 300 Acres of land under order in council 23 june 1808. At the time I
petitioned I was told by Judge Fisher, Col Credford and the______(not readable) Esq and others that my
name would be placed on the U.E. List and that my children would each receive 200 acres of land on
account of my service along with many others who served with me at the same time besides their other
military land. I assure you that I would not undergo the fatigue and run the risk that I did in the
blockhouse for half the lands in upper Canada, only imagine the whole American Army engaged against
the BlockHouse four four and twenty hours. Our cannons dismantled the enemies shots and then for us
to _________(not readable) THE BULLETS AND CANNON SHOTS FLYING ABOT OUR HEADS IN ALL
DIRECTIONS. iN SHORT OUR WHOLE BLOCK HOUSE RIDDLED FROM TOP TO BOTTOM THE DEAD AND DYING STREWING THE FLOOR OF OUR LITTLE FORT SO THAT WE HAd to scramble over them while we were pursuing our work of defence, and at last between sunset and dusk to fire the last cannon shots
had, after which we fired musket balls, which I myself carried in my hat. Two hatsfull for every shot and
knowing at the same time that if we fell alive in the enemies hands the gall would be our portion.being
what they termed refugees. I had hope my name paced on the U.E. List as my children are wishing to
draw their lands next July Court and I have doubt but the government would grant 200 acres in addition
to the 300 acres already granted by complying with the request you will very much oblige. Your very

This email below came from a fellow researcher in 2000 and shows the story of Nancy being the daughter of Garrett Miller has been around awhile. Janet's email is below.

"I, too think I'm fishing in the right pond, the problem may be proving it. I'm not so sure Joseph and Nancy were married in the States. The apocryphal, but highly repeated family story is that Joseph came to Canada via sleigh in 1785 with his sister Ursula who was married to Sampson Striker. Benjamin and James Clapp were already here, as was Rhoda who was married to Abraham Losee. Joseph originally took up 200 acres on Lot 12, 2nd Concession Richmond Twsp., L&A County. The story on Nancy Miller is that she came to Canada with the Roblin Family (four different branches), who were all from either New Jersey or Orange County, N.Y. so the two were unlikely ever to have met beforehand. (Again repeated widely). George Playter's "History of Methodism" (sorry I don't have a publication date off the top of my head) definitely says that Joseph Clapp was a brother-in-law of "the Widow Roblin", who is Elizabeth Miller who married John Roblin. In the early years of settlement, the only clergyman who was legally able to marry anyone was the Rev. John Langhorn at Kingston, and I can find records of Benjamin Clapp marrying, but not Joseph. The only wrinkle in this is that the British WOULD accept a Quaker marriage rite, but I'm not sure whether or not a Quaker meeting would have been organized, AND Nancy Miller was not a Quaker and they would not have been allowed to marry within the meeting. I suppose it's worthwhile checking to see if there is a marriage license in Dutchess County, but if there is, then Nancy can't be the daughter of Garrett Miller. Somewhere (again I'm sorry it would take a while to find) I remember seeing a postulation that there was a second John Roblin in the County and that Nancy was his niece, but the coincidence of having two Roblin/Miller families ending up in PEC is just a little too difficult to believe. Yes, Joseph did have a will - he left his mill in Milford to each son consecutively, oldest to youngest and the oldest, Phillip, didn't want to give it up and hung on to it for nearly 20 years until he was struck by lightning and killed, and then the mill passed on the way it was supposed to. This was accepted by everyone as divine intervention, of course. A piece of wood from the nearby tree that toppled over on him is still at Joseph, Jr's homestead near Milford. This farm was in the hands of Clapp's right up until about a year ago, and I heard that the family took the piece of wood with them, but as soon as they removed it from the property all sorts of weird, bad things started happening to them, so they took it back and asked the new owners to please safeguard it. The bad things stopped immediately.!!!!?????"

Hampton Miller's son Nathan is born in Canada ... he is the son of his first wife and appears to be their only child.
Hampton married again to Deborah and children are born starting 1801. Mary who is born 1801 dies 1805 so there is not census to determine for sure where she was born though people say it was New York .... the second child Katherine b. about 1804 and no further info on her so no idea where she is born either .... third child Mary "Polly" is born 1804 and married Jervis Dean .... I find them in the 1850 census and she is born New York .... so we know that Hampton is back in New York by 1805 .... it would appear that he never sold his share of the land and if Joseph buys him out it is not recorded until after 1815 or does not happen till after 1815.
